Coming back successfully from injuries is a great art for athletes.

Triathlete Niklas Ludwig seems to be able to master this challenge.

Freising

- He had to keep his feet still for a long time - now he has reported back impressively: triathlete Niklas Ludwig from TSV Jahn Freising promptly won the aquabike contest at the Challenge Kaiserwinkl-Walchsee after a hip injury and a corona infection.

And just a few days later, on his 20th birthday, his body sent him an important signal.

Niklas Ludwig had a lot planned for 2022.

The Kirchdorfer wanted to compete with the best in his sport on the middle distance on May 22nd in Samorin, Slovakia, at The Championship – the world championship organized by the organizer Challenge.

In order to be able to win the distances with 1.9 kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling and 21.1 kilometers of running, he had worked hard in winter training on the island of Fuerteventura.

"The form was very good, second place in the overall ranking would have been realistic in any case," says the endurance athlete.

Hip problems slow Ludwig down: "I was lucky that it wasn't a fatigue fracture"

But everything turned out differently: before the Challenge Gran Canaria at the beginning of April – which he had finished second in his age group and twelfth overall over the shorter Olympic distance – the first problems with his hips appeared.

“The pain radiated down to my knees, especially when I was walking.

In the end I was lucky that it was only a bone irritation and not a stress fracture," emphasizes Ludwig.

"If I had kept up the intensity, it would have become one." In order to avoid this, "training at half mast" was the order of the day in the following weeks.

He quickly dismissed the fact that nothing would come of the medal hunt at The Championship.

"I am a person who always looks ahead."

Ludwig "flashed" after victory in aquabike competition at Walchsee

The patience and physical therapy finally paid off.

Four weeks ago he got the go to start at the Walchsee in the swimming and cycling competition.

“It would have been far too early for a proper triathlon including the running discipline.

Because when you run, your hips are put under the most strain,” says the 20-year-old.

"But I really wanted to take the opportunity to compete in the aquabike competition." The corona disease almost threw a spanner in the works.

But it worked with the start - and after 1.9 kilometers on water and 90 kilometers on the bike he was only "flashed" by the performance that he was able to show at Walchsee.

Ludwig celebrated overall victory with a total time of 2:40.16 hours.

How to proceed now?

Further training, especially when running, will show the way.

The start at the Collins Cup over the middle distance on August 21st in Samorin is a fixed date in his diary.

He might also help out in the triathlon regional league team of TSV Jahn.

His long-term goals remain the 2023 Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Lahti, Finland, and the leap into the professional triathlon circus.

But now it's time to build up form - and Niklas Ludwig has also taken another important step here: On his 20th birthday about a week ago, he was able to run a five-kilometer training run without pain for the first time.

“This is the best birthday present for me.

I see that things are looking up.”
