TOPS
Jonas Vingegaard, the perfect race
Worn, inspired by a team determined to try everything to regret nothing, the Danish climber (2nd in the 2021 tour) turned into a scorer.
He did not let the opportunity slip away and concluded with authority a stage led with beating speed which gave him his first stage victory on the Tour de France and the yellow jersey.
The first of his career.
Warren Barguil, the brave
The Breton from the Arkéa-Samsic team has regained his legs and the euphoria of the 2017 Tour when he won in Foix (July 14) and at the top of Izoard with the best climber's polka dot jersey.
Barguil attacked 52 km from the finish, gave everything, attacked the Col du Granon alone (3'10'' ahead of the yellow jersey group) before seeing his hopes melt away.
And Nairo Quintana, his teammate, overtook him to get 2nd place in the stage.
Barguil, out of breath after believing it (10th at 4'16'').
Jumbo-Visma, all fired up
The Dutch team tried everything.
From afar.
72 km from the finish.
By multiplying the attacks with Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard.
A rehearsal in order to lonely and experience Tadej Pogacar, the yellow jersey.
Wout Van Aert took long stints in the valley before climbing the Col du Granon, the epilogue of the day.
Jumbo-Visma struggled without releasing the threat.
Pogacar, long serene, extremely solid, ended up giving in.
Romain Bardet-David Gaudu, determined duo
DSM team leader Romain Bardet rode with heart and purpose.
He knew how to manage his effort and in the Col du Granon he was able to place an attack.
5 km from the finish, the Auvergnat started.
And on the run, even if he could not keep the wheel of Jonas Vingegaard, he was looking for a place of honor (3rd at 1'10'').
And a place of choice in the general classification (2nd at 2'16'' from Vingegaard).
Very promising ahead of a hearty program.
David Gaudu (5th in the stage at 2'4'') also finished a stage well during which he fought hard, well surrounded by the Groupama-FDJ team and in particular Valentin Madouas.
FLOPS
Tadej Pogacar, the day without
The Slovenian was on cloud nine.
He fell suddenly.
Harassed by the attacks, the yellow jersey ended up giving in 4.6 km from the finish when in the Granon, a slope with dreaded percentages, left him without reaction.
Deprived of sound, of light.
A violent blow of bamboo.
Failure may be due to heat.
The leader of the UAE Team Emirates team drops to 3rd place in the general classification (2'22'' from Jonas Vingegaard, the new leader).
Mathieu Van der Poel, the final point
The Dutchman, suffering for long days, dismounted.
The first difficulty of the day, the Col du Télégraphe, was too much.
The grandson of Raymond Poulidor, very late in the general classification (95th at 1h4'34'' from the yellow jersey at the start of Morzine) was forced to retire.
As in 2021.
Thibaut Pinot, the day without
At ease in Châtel, Thibaut Pinot was quickly let go and had a difficult day in the heart of a trying stage.
He who was one of David Gaudu's guardian angels was unable to play his role.
The Franc-Comtois will be pleased to see L'Alpe d'Huez take shape this Thursday, to turn the page.
Hoping to be able to play a role.
