This Sunday, his Jumbo-Visma team decided to put an end to his ordeal.

The Slovenian will heal his wounds.

To allow my injuries to heal properly, I decided not to start today

The Slovenian has experienced a lot of suffering on the Tour.

Beaten by the wire in 2020 during the La Planche des Belles Filles time trial the day before the parade on the Champs-Élysées, he was forced to retire from the 9th stage last year.

He hadn't been able to recover from the injuries of a fall during the 3rd stage ("

I tried to be focused on the present moment, to spend the days one after the other, but after a few days I since it was getting me nowhere

,” he confided, bruised).

This year, departing from Copenhagen, he shared the reins of the Jumbo-Visma formation with Jonas Vinegaard.

He thought he had broken the neck of the curse in France with successes in Paris-Nice and the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Alas, he was struck by fate again when he fell on a hit straw bale strayed on the road after being hit by a motorcycle.

The race had, once again, redistributed the cards.

With heart and humility, the Slovenian then played the team game.

Tremendous self-sacrifice in the Col du Granon in particular.

Saturday, in the stage leading to Mende, he had suffered from the start during an early attack from Tadej Pogacar, had finished the day late (113th at 24'23 ''), tested.

In the general classification he slipped to 21st place, 23'29'' behind his team-mate Vingegaard.

But wanted to finish.

The last stand of a man of honour...
