That was bitter: The VfB Hallbergmoos footballers were knocked out late in Landsberg.

The goals came in the 89th minute and in overtime.

Hallbergmoos

– The beauty and the cruel thing about football is that it cannot always be explained.

In the case of VfB Hallbergmoos, the expression "cruel" is almost an understatement: The Bavarian league team played a huge game against championship favorites TSV Landsberg on Saturday afternoon, had almost won and lost 2-1 (0-0 ).

The Hallbergmoosers were fully into the game from the first minute and they just continued where they left off in the second half of last season and in the relegation.

Defensively, the VfB footballers were completely stable - and it didn't matter that the opposing center forward was Sascha Mölders: The ex-professional and Löwen crowd favorite only had one shot after a good quarter of an hour - and it was harmless (17th).

On the other side, Tobias Krause pulled in with the Arjen Robben memory move and narrowly missed the goal (21st).

All in all, the 0:0 after 45 minutes was almost the logical consequence, the Hallbergmooser could live with this result.

"The team costs as much as six other Bayern league teams together."

After the break, Sascha Mölders showed his class, but aimed a volley just wide of the goal.

And the guests' response?

It was mercilessly effective: Andreas Giglberger hit a wide pass from his own penalty area - and then Julian Kersting suddenly found himself alone in front of the goal and netted (53').

The Hallbergers planned this raid knowing that in a game with such a top team (VfB coach Matthias Strohmaier: “The team costs as much as six other Bayern league teams combined”) you have to make a lot out of little possession.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

The goal hit the hosts to the core, because apart from a Mölders shot that was well parried by Martin Dinkel, nothing came.

The Hallbergmoosers controlled what was happening, worked very concentrated on the defensive and had the best chances to counterattack, but they were played too sloppily.

David Lucksch was once free in front of the goal - that would have been the preliminary decision.

As once with the mother of all defeats

When VfB Hallbergmoos almost had victory in their pockets despite missing 2-0, the catastrophe struck, as FC Bayern once experienced in the mother of all defeats in the 1999 Champions League final: two goals out of nowhere result upside down.

First, Mölders turned so actively into keeper Dinkel that not every referee would have decided on a penalty.

This time Landsberg's kicking celebrity got the whistle, Steffen Krautschneider certainly converted (89th).

In added time, Matej Rados then added the winning goal, although he had Fortuna on his side: After a corner, he scored a deflected shot from the edge of the box - and goalkeeper Dinkel was completely blocked from sight.

"Football isn't fair," said VfB coach Strohmaier after the game.

"Because we played a great game - and a 1-0 win would have been world class." Nevertheless, you take away the realization from the start of the season that you can beat any opponent in the league.
