Shericka Jackson in the second-best time ever and Noah Lyles with an outstanding 19.31 seconds won gold over the

200 meters

at the IAAF World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

The 28-year-old Jamaican Jackson stayed in 21.45 seconds only eleven hundredths above the 34-year-old record of the American and world record holder Florence Griffith-Joyner (21.34), who died in 1998.

For Jackson, the 21.45 seconds meant a world record.

She relegated teammate and world 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to second by 0.36 seconds.

Bronze went to defending champion Dina Asher-Smith of England in 22.02 seconds.

Defending champion Lyles ran the fourth best time ever recorded over that distance.

Only Usain Bolt - in his world record of 19.19 seconds in Berlin 2009 and the previous record of 19.30 seconds set a year earlier at the Beijing Olympics - and his Jamaican compatriot Yohan Blake in 19.26 seconds were already faster.

Silver and bronze also went to sprinters from the USA.

Kenneth Bednarek finished in 19.77 seconds, Erriyon Knighton needed 19.80 seconds.

Lyles also went on to catch Michael Johnson's US record time of 19.32 seconds at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Julian Weber made it into the final with the third-best qualifying distance of all starters and wants to win a medal.

With 87.28 meters, the Olympic fourth-placed athlete qualified for the medal round of the best twelve throwers on Sunday night (3:35 a.m. CEST, TV: ZDF).

On the other hand, the World Cup was over for Andreas Hofmann, who came second in the European Championship after three failed attempts.

Favorites are defending champion Anderson Peters from Grenada and Indian Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra.

Peters threw 89.91 meters in the qualification, Chopra came to 88.39 meters.

The German Athletics Association (DLV) may even have been threatened with a world championship without a medal – the historical negative result from Paris 2003 (four times a medal) is hardly achievable.

Three corona cases in the German team

The German champion Mohamed Mohumed was eliminated in the lead over

5000 meters

.

After the 23-year-old from Dortmund was initially able to keep up with the top group, he lost his strength.

After a time of 13:52.00 minutes, he ended up in 33rd place overall.

Frankfurt's Sam Parsons made it into the final, finishing 14th in 13:24.50 minutes.

Maximilian Thorwirth from Düsseldorf didn't make it either.

Jacob Krop from Kenya, sixth in the World Championships, was the quickest in 13:13.30 minutes.

Mohumed had previously caused irritation with statements.

He woke up in the morning, "I wasn't feeling well.

But then of course you stand at the starting line.

It's one of the biggest events in the world and when you qualify you want to run,' he had said.

When asked whether he had tested himself for Corona before the race, he had denied.

Mohumed said: "I was in closer contact with my coach a few days ago, who tested positive.

But I wasn't allowed to come here without a negative test, and I tested myself all the time beforehand and then just ignored it." Because: "If I start now and think I have Corona, then nothing works more.

Some of the German team got caught.«

The DLV announced late Thursday evening (local time) that Mohumed had tested negative after the race.

The DLV had previously announced Christopher Linke’s corona case on Thursday.

The walker from Potsdam tested positive and cannot compete over 35 kilometers on Saturday.

As the association then announced in the evening, team doctor Andrew Lichtenthal had found a total of three positive corona cases in the German World Cup team, in addition to Linke, staff from the coaching and medical team were affected.

“All those who tested positive were immediately isolated, all contact persons are tested regularly, as are all members of the medical team every day.

All three patients are doing well given the circumstances," the statement said.
