The climber was out of injury for the Tour de France, a race where he has already won a stage at the top of the terrible Col de la Loze, but he had landed in Spain to participate in the Grand Prix Villafranca-Clasica de Ordizia which begins next Monday.
This season, Miguel Angel Lopez has experienced a performance far removed from that which made him one of the best climbers on the circuit a few years ago.
He had nevertheless won a stage of the Tour of the Alps, before abandoning the Tour of Italy on the fourth stage due to hip pain.
He has not appealed since.
