Despite their defeat in the final, the French sabreuses brought back an eighth medal to the tricolor delegation. How to finish on top

Tricolor fencing is doing well.

After the 11 charms collected at the European Championships in Antalya last June, the French team gleaned eight at the Worlds in Cairo and finished at the top of the medal standings.

A performance that the blue delegation had not achieved since 2007. This Saturday, at the conclusion of these World Championships, the French sabers lost 45-40 to the Hungarians but still brought back a new metal in the bag.

A silver medal which succeeds the bronze obtained by the male foil fencers, a little earlier in the day.

Beaten by a short header by the Americans in the semi-finals (44-45), the Blues flew over their match for third place against Japan (45-30) and obtained their second charm in less than a month after the silver won at the European Championships.

Cannone and Lefort confirm, Thibus for a first

A conclusive Saturday for the Blues which comes to put an end to almost dream worlds.

Eight medals, a first place in the final standings but above all four titles.

In epee, Romain Cannone had to work in each match but ended up triumphing by beating his Japanese opponent in the final (15-12).

Particularly scrutinized after his Olympic title last summer, the tricolor, which has since established itself as a benchmark in the discipline, has held its rank.

In foil, Ysaora Thibus went for a more unexpected coronation.

The Guadeloupe, never titled until then, won the most beautiful reward of her career.

All while largely dominating her opponents, including the Italian Arianna Errigo in the final.

Foil has also brought success for men.

Enzo Lefort, Olympic champion in 2021 in Tokyo, takes his place on the roof of the world and retains his title acquired in 2019. We have to go back to 2005 to see France leave with four individual medals.

Finally, the blue delegation also distinguished itself in teams by winning the men's epee final against Italy (45-42).

Eight charms, including four in gold, a first place in the rankings and confirmations, French fencing leaves Egypt with the feeling of accomplishment.
