It is the first German medal at the World Championships in Athletics in Eugene: the women's 4x100 meter relay is third. Julian Weber is fourth in the javelin throw, decathlete Niklas Kaul has to improve on the second day.

The German sprint quartet with Tatjana Pinto, Alexandra Burghardt, Gina Lückenkemper and Rebekka Haase won the first German medal at the World Championships in Athletics in Eugene.

Over the 4x100 meters, the relay surprisingly came third on Saturday (local time) with 42.03 seconds and took bronze.

Gold went to the USA in 41.14 seconds, who finished 0.04 seconds ahead of Jamaica for world 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and world 200m champion Shericka Jackson.

Javelin thrower Julian Weber, on the other hand, missed a medal again in fourth place.

In the decathlon, defending champion Niklas Kaul is clearly behind at halftime, but his strong disciplines are still to come.

"It feels like a dream right now, I hope I don't wake up," said Pinto on ZDF.

"We've wanted it so often, and today we did it," Burghardt commented on the success.

She had won silver as a brakewoman in bobsleigh at the Olympic Winter Games in February and said before the upcoming European Championships in Munich: "Now there's still gold missing." Germany's best sprinter, Gina Lückenkemper, said: "We talked about the luck of the fit, and today it used to be with us.

Finally, finally!” Last runner Haase had secured third place on the home stretch.

“The medal is a sensation.

You would have expected men to do that.

That's the jolt we needed," said DLV President Jürgen Kessing of the dpa news agency.

The German men's relay with Kevin Kranz, Joshua Hartmann, Owen Ansah and Lucas Ansah-Peprah, who had performed well before the World Cup, had missed the finals because of two failed handovers.

For a German 4x100 meter relay, it was the first medal since bronze at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

At that time, Marion Wagner, Anne Cibis, Cathleen Tschirch and Verena Sailer finished behind Jamaica and the Bahamas.

A year ago it was enough at the Olympic Games in the same line-up as now in the USA for fifth place.

Canada dupes US sprinters, Weber narrowly misses medal

In the men's category, gold went to Canada ahead of the USA with a world record of 37.48 seconds.

The favored hosts around 200-meter world champion Noah Lyles were 0.07 seconds behind at the finish.

Great Britain came third in 37.83 seconds.

Javelin thrower Weber was deeply disappointed.

The 86.86 meters from the first attempt was not enough for the man from Mainz for the podium.

“It's all hurting a little right now.

i'm really sad

Fourth place is great, but I really wanted more," said Weber on ZDF.

“I felt really exhausted.” National coach Boris Obergföll reported that Weber buckled his foot on the second attempt and was unsettled as a result.

Like at the Olympics, only fourth place remained.

Anderson Peters from Grenada successfully defended his title with 90.54 meters.

Indian Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra secured silver with 88.13 meters ahead of Olympic silver medalist Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech Republic, who threw 88.09 meters.

Kaul back, Warner out

Defending champion Niklas Kaul is in 16th place after the first day of the decathlon competition.

The 24-year-old from Mainz showed solid performances in the five disciplines on Saturday (local time), but no personal bests and collected 4147 points.

However, Kaul is considered a man of the second day with his special strength in the javelin throw.

Ayden Owens-Delerme from Puerto Rico will start the second day of competition as number one with 4606 points.

Olympic champion and title favorite Damian Warner was unlucky.

The Canadian injured his thigh in the 400 meter race and had to retire.

He had been in the lead after four disciplines.

»It would have been his chance to become world champion here.

It's a really stupid feeling, it hurts me a bit, "said Kaul on ZDF about Warner's end.

He himself has at least regained “a lot of self-confidence”.

The best German is World Cup debutant Leo Neugebauer from LG Leinfelden-Echterdingen.

With 4298 points, the athlete, who is studying in Texas, is ninth in the interim ranking.
