The Alpencup offered versatility in all facets: There were strong performances at different levels - and an Olympic champion who was lucky in misfortune.

Schwaiganger – When Meike Weber and her mare “Kiaora” had passed the “Seitz Coffin” with a total of three jumps, there was particularly loud applause.

Sure, the duo from the "Pferdefreunde Fischen" had mastered the tricky uphill and downhill passage very well.

The jubilation of the audience mixed with recognition for the equestrian performance but also a good deal of relief.

Because immediately before, the visitors at this point of the cross-country route had been shown that versatility carries a certain risk.

Olympic champion Jung falls and has to go to the hospital

Ironically, the star of the "iWest Alpencup" in Schwaiganger, Olympic champion Michael Jung, had a bad fall with his horse "Highlighter" at obstacle 9a - the jump to Coffin.

A real moment of shock: the medical service moved in immediately, the following statements in the radio traffic of the officials did not bode well.

After anxious minutes it was at least clear that Jung was responsive.

He had to be taken to the hospital, where it turned out that nothing was broken.

The duo took second place in the Bavarian championship.

The following day, Jung himself confirmed that the fall did not end well, "even if everything hurts".

And "Highlighter" with which the 39-year-old recently won the German Championship?

The eleven-year-old Irish stallion received “absolutely no scratches”, says Jung.

The involuntary visit to the hospital prevented Jung from later going into the terrain with his second top horse, "Chipmunk FRH".

After dressage and jumping, the pair took first place.

In 2017, Michael Jung had already started in Schwaiganger.

Directly after the favorite, Michaela Iglhauser (Austria) and her gelding "Look at me" triggered the MIM system at obstacle 17 - a folding mechanism that is intended to prevent serious falls if the horse incorrectly touches a jump with a certain force.

Again there was an interruption.

For Weber and "Kiaora" (nicknamed "Guz"), who was next in line, the wait wasn't easy - especially given Saturday's oppressive humidity.

"There are more pleasant things," said the professional rider.

The starting times are specified to the second, the riders prepare themselves and their horses accordingly.

However, Meike Weber and "Guz" have so much experience as a team that they don't throw them off course.

After dressage and jumping, the two of them also mastered the 3,300-metre-long cross-country course.

Weber did not take the twelve penalty points for exceeding the target time (6:00 minutes) tragically.

"She ran as best she could," she said, looking at "Guz."

In the end, the “Pferdefreunde Fischen” duo came in ninth in the international three-star test (50.80 points) and even clinched a placement.

Alpencup: "Pferdefreunde Fischen" placed, Olympic champion Jung is very lucky

That's what the tournament manager says about the "iWest Alpencup"

The effort for the "iWest Alpencup" this year "was much greater than usual", says

Dr.

Matilda Holmer-Rattenhuber

, tournament manager and chairwoman of the

RZV Lechtal

.

Due to Corona and renovations at the main and state stud, there was no tournament in 2020 and 2021.

For the comeback, obstacles had to be rebuilt and the areas around the ponds redesigned.

The veterinarian was "super happy" and "totally satisfied" with the process and praised the cooperation with helpers, officials and sponsors.

On Saturday alone, the day of the cross-country rides at the CCI, 100 helpers (mostly volunteers) were on duty.

The hot phase of preparation lasted six weeks, the Alpencup itself lasted four days.

"We're all a bit tired now," said Holmer-Rattenhuber on Monday with a smile.

The club is “grateful that we can use the facility in Schwaiganger”.

The site and the ambience are "amazing".

That a scene star like Michael Jung reported with his two best horses

"is a sign for us," says Holmer-Rattenhuber.

She described the top rider as “nice and uncomplicated”.

The fall of the Olympic champion off-road was of course a downer – Holmer-Rattenhuber described the accident as “ugly”.

The head of the tournament was happy about the number of more than 180 riders and the good attendance from the spectators.

Something like that "gives us a lot back".

The RZV wants to continue hosting international tournaments in Schwaiganger in the future.

The overall victory went to a rider who used to work at the main and state stud farm and now works in Lower Franconia: Nina Schultes (TG Lohrbachhof).

With "Grand Prix iWest" she was second after strong dressage (28.5) and jumping (one down).

Off-road, the pair completed their first win together by exceeding the time by 15 seconds (6.0 points) and a total of 38.5 points.

Schultes and "Grand Prix iWest" (owned by the main sponsor from Hohenpeissenberg) recently took third place as a team at the Nations Cup in Switzerland.

In Schwaiganger, winning the three-star CCI also meant winning the Bavarian championship title.

After 2016, 2019 and 2021, it was the fourth triumph at Bavarian level for the 28-year-old.

The veteran Robert Sirch already has the Bavarian championship title in his list of successes.

In the two-star test, he finished ninth (34.6) with the seven-year-old "Gortglas Diamonds in the Sky", which gave the duo of "Pferdefreunde Fischen" a placement.

Faye Füllgraebe-Jung, Michael Jung's wife, won the gold ribbon with "Ignatz H" (28.1).

Skilful jump over the "table": Meike Weber and the eleven-year-old mare "Kiaora" finished the three-star test with participants from five nations in ninth place and thus achieved a placement.

Robert Sirch's cross-country ride was once again fine to watch.

The duo solved the demanding tasks related to the "water of the Weilheimer Pferdefreunde" in a manner well worth seeing.

The same applied to daughter Johanna Sirch, who narrowly missed out on a placement with "Kilcoltrim Skyline" due to four penalty points too many.

The horse "ran really well," said Johanna Sirch.

Appearances and the end result were each "in the frame".

She praised the organizers from RZV Lechtal: They had put in "a lot of effort".

Words of appreciation could also be heard from other starters as they walked across the site.

versatility

The eventing consists of the disciplines of

dressage

,

cross-country riding

and

jumping

.

The result of the dressage is converted into points.

The better the grade, the lower the score.

In jumping and cross-country, it is then a matter of not collecting any more points (due to discards/time violations/refusals, etc.).

Because the one with the fewest points wins.

International tests are called

CCI

(Concours complet Internationale) and last two to three days.

The number of stars (from one to five in ascending order) indicates the difficulty.

Not every rider can start at a CCI as he pleases, but has to prove that he has the appropriate qualifications.

To the

Safety

vests (an airbag system)

are available for riders to increase

safety off-road.

Jumps are increasingly equipped with a folding mechanism (

MIM system

) that gives way when the horse touches the obstacle with too much pressure.

In addition to the international tests, national competitions were offered on Sunday.

There were some riders at the start who had acted as helpers on the days before.

The Upper Bavarian team champions were determined in the A* eventing.

There, PSV Unterbeuern won – with a lead of 0.2 points – ahead of TG HLG Schwaiganger.

The “Horse Friends Fishing” won bronze.

The teams of the "Weilheimer Pferdefreunde" and the RZV Lechtal finished fifth and seventh.
