The World Athletics Council confirmed last night (Monday), that runners who are already eliminated in the opening round of the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 in runs from 200 to 1500 meters, including the hurdles, will get another chance to continue competing.
It should be noted that several sports already use this method, including judo, rowing, taekwondo and wrestling.
But unlike athletics where a runner can be eliminated in the first round and still go on to win gold thanks to the extra chance - competitors in these sports will be able to win a bronze medal at best.
In this way, the new format of the repechage (second chance) in athletics will replace the previous format in which athletes advance a step, according to the fastest times, in addition to those who automatically advance according to the first places.

These events will now have four rounds - first round, second chance, semi-final and final, with the schedules varying according to the specific nature of the event.
The new format means that every athlete competing in the round-robin events will have at least two races in Paris 2024.
"After consultation with the athletes and coaches, we believe this is an innovation that will make progress in these events simpler for the athletes and build anticipation for fans and broadcasters," said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe.
