The tennis tournament for the Weilheim Sparkassencup took place again on the usual July date.

The field of participants was smaller than in 2021, but the level was still high.

Weilheim - As far as the weather is concerned, the TC Weilheim did everything right at the 20th edition of the Sparkassencup.

The traditional July date, to which the return was made this year, gave everyone involved good and at the same time stable conditions.

Last year, the tournament was held in May because the team season had been postponed due to the Corona situation and would have collided with the cup.

At the time, constant rain and cold, at least at the beginning of the multi-day competition, made the organizers frown.

However, the most recent appointment did not turn out to be entirely problem-free.

Because on the same weekend of all days an open competition of the "Dunlop Senior Tour" took place in Bad Kissingen.

and he “pulled some players there”, as TC spokesman Oliver Richter put it.

According to Richter, the response to the Sparkasse Cup this year was "much lower" after the record participation of 160 starters last year.

110 men and women in the classes men and women 40 and up had entered.

One of the players who played in Weilheim last year and this year in Bad Kissingen is Norbert Henn (Tennis 65 Eschborn).

The German number two in the men's 60s - 2020 tournament winner in the district town - chose the route to Lower Franconia, although for him as an Amberger the distances to the tournament locations were almost the same at around 200 kilometers.

Nevertheless, there was a lot going on in Weilheim, and winners were determined in nine age competitions.

The level was once again remarkable: "They offered top-class and exciting tennis," said Richter.

In the women's 60, two players from the host TC Weilheim made it into the semi-finals.

Christine Reiser had bad luck there in her duel with Gabriele Seubert (Polizei SV Haar), who was number 13 in the DTB ranking.

The TC player could not give away three match points;

in the end, Reiser lost in the champions tie-break (6:1, 4:6, 14:16).

Christiane Rill meanwhile kept the upper hand in two sets against Bettina Langl from the women's 50 regional league team TC Bad Endorf (6:2, 6:2).

In the hard-fought final, Rill showed nerves of steel and defeated Seubert 5:7, 7:5 10:8 in the champion's tie-break.

A new winner in the men's 40 Sparkasse Cup

In the women's 50 field, the tournament favorite was on top at the end.

Liselot Prechtel (SC Riessersee), who had already won the Sparkassencup several times, defeated unseeded Martina Simon (STK Garching) 6:0, 6:2 in the final.

Regional league player Luise Humml from Schongau, seeded number three, lost out in the quarterfinals against Svenja Lorenz (TC Siemens) 3:6, 1:6.

In the men's 40s, Weilheim's local hero Christian Fuchs, who won in 2019 and 2021, was unable to continue his winning streak.

Due to injury, he had to forego participation.

Andreas Aigner (TC Geretsried) seized this chance and won the final against Andi Bernhard (TC Thalkirchen Munich) 6:3, 6:1.

There was also a new winner in the men's 50s: Frank Unterrainer, who plays for TC Weilheim, triumphed there in the absence of last year's winner Terry Deeth.

In the final of the two top seeded players, he defeated Jochen Wejnar (TC Rot-Weiss Landshut) 7:5, 6:4.

By the way: everything from the region is also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.

And in our Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.

Similar to the women's 50, the men's 55 was won by what the organizers called the “big favourite”: Neil Patrick Smith from TC Blau-Weiss 71 Delbrück, number one in the German rankings, only gave up four games before winning the tournament.

And he had to leave that to Alexander Kerndl (TC Topspin) in the final.

Of course, that didn't help the opponent either, because Smith won 6:2, 6:2.

Kerndl prevailed in the semifinals against Roland Ehrlich from Weilheim (7:6, 6:4).

The quarter-final saw a Weilheim-internal duel, which Ehrlich won against Richter 6:1, 6:0.

In the men's 60 field, "an old acquaintance and long-term winner of the Sparkasse Cup" won, according to a statement.

In the final, Heinz Schwarz (STK Garching) clearly defeated number two seeded Hermann Striebel (TC Biberach) 6:1, 6:2.

In the very strong competition in the men's 65s, fifth seeded Robert Stögmann (FC 74 Munich) had the most reason to be happy.

He won the final against Toni Schweitzer (TA FV Rheingold Rübenach) 6:3, 6:3.

In the men's 70s, local hero Johann Schwinghammer had the chance to make it to the final.

However, he had to admit defeat in the semifinals against the later tournament winner Rolf Böhrer (SV Kranzberg).

Something similar happened in the men's 75: There Günter Willberg (TC Weilheim) was in the semifinals after two wins, but lost his duel there against Klaus Frenzel (TSV Pentenried) in two sets (2:6, 2:6).

Frenzel, seeded number four, then won his final against Rolf Dieter (6:1, 6:3), who is currently without a club.
