According to its football boss Mario Nauen, the pay-TV broadcaster Sky wants to try to get the TV rights to the women's Bundesliga.
"I've already indicated that we're interested in it and that we want to position ourselves more broadly, especially in terms of women's football and women's sport," he said on Tuesday at a press conference on the occasion of the season opener in the DFB Cup and the Men's Bundesliga.
At the same time, Nauen emphasized that Sky “will not do any economically wild things”.
From this season onwards, Sky will be showing the women's DFB-Pokal in full (in 2021/22 Sky only broadcast one game live per round) and games from the Women's Super League in England.
According to Nauen, the audience target group is not just women.
"That would be thinking too one-dimensionally," he said.
He referred to the strong ratings on ARD and ZDF with the broadcasts of games at the current Women's European Championship in England.
“It would be presumptuous to say that we only want to appeal to women.
Everyone who was interested belonged to the target group.
New tender also for the 3rd league
The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Monday that it would tender the media rights for the women's Bundesliga and the men's third division via the subsidiary DFB GmbH & Co. KG.
It is about the four seasons 2023/2024 to 2026/2027.
The rights of the two leagues will be advertised at the same time, but separately for the first time.
The rights for the 3rd division and women's Bundesliga are currently held by Deutsche Telekom in the pay area until mid-2023, which is showing the games on MagentaSport for its customers.
In free TV, the rights have been held by the ARD agency SportA since 2018.
The contract with the ARD-ZDF rights marketer currently also includes the women's international matches, which are usually shown in the first and second.
