Alexander Zverev experienced a horror trip at the French Open: injury in the semifinals.

He is now talking about the bitter moments - and his comeback.

Munich - Alexander Zverev won the Olympics - but he has not yet been granted a Grand Slam.

The best German tennis player has come very close to winning one of the four largest tournaments several times.

At the US Open 2020 he made it to the final.

He was last in the semifinals this year at the French Open in Paris - but the match against Rafael Nadal ended in the most bitter way there is: with a serious injury.

format "The big Zverev documentary - 'Mission Comeback'"

the man from Hamburg talks about perhaps the worst moment of his career: "I heard three bangs, then I lay on the floor in pain and couldn't move my foot.

Within seconds he was twice as big as before.

That's when I knew: I might have to give up a match for the first time in my life.

I've never stopped a match in my life before."

Alexander Zverev: "At first you think, of course, your career is over"

Zverev talks about the desperation he felt at that moment: "Of course, at first you think your career is over.

You heard the sound of vomiting, a certain fear is already there.”

The first relief came when he left the inside of the stadium: “The pain in the changing room was excruciating.

I've been banging on so many painkillers that I'm coming down somehow.

That was not nice."

And wouldn't he have hurt himself?

Zverev himself believes that if he had defeated Nadal in the final he would have had a chance and could have given his career a significant boost by winning the tournament: "I still think it could have gone either way.

I would have believed myself capable of the final against Casper Ruud.

Then Grand Slam victory, number one in the world - and so on and so forth.

Alexander Zverev gives insights into his everyday rehabilitation life

Instead of the new career momentum, Zverev now has the harsh reality of rehab on the program, as he reveals: “I get up at 6.45 a.m. and I’m sometimes here in rehab at 7.20 a.m..

And my day ends at 7 p.m.

A 12-hour day when I always do something." Zverev on the extent of the injuries: "I tore three ligaments, four others are injured."

Nevertheless, he is already thinking about returning to the tennis court.

Maybe there will even be a comeback at the US Open in New York in the fall?

Zverev is optimistic: "I hope so.

Some say it's completely unrealistic, some say it could work.

I don't want to play the US Open to lose in the first round.

I want the chance to go far.”

The 25-year-old's ambition is unbroken: "I still want to be the best.

this is my way

And I hope that I can master it."
