Football EM 2022: Germany against France in the individual review

2022-07-28T08:55:53.477Z

In the semi-final triumph against France, Alexandra Popp scored her EM tournament goals number five and six. But two young players also impressed: Lena Oberdorf with her presence and Jule Brand as an offensive factor.

Merle Frohms, Goal:

The German number one kept her box clean for almost 400 minutes at the European Championship.

But just before half-time she conceded her first goal – and what an unfortunate thing.

The ball bounced back off the post, against her back and then it was in the goal.

But how cool can you react to an own goal?

In the second half she prevented the 1:2 with a strong block, shortly afterwards she showed a reflex against a Renard header.

Giulia Gwinn, defence:

From the start, the German energy bundle was on the hunt for duels and supported the German defense team with many changes of sides, Gwinn ran to space and intercepted passes.

But her job also consists of offensive work, and Gwinn also did this with great pleasure in cooperation with the new member of the team, Jule Brand.

Gwinn was also part of the nice move at 1-0.

Kathrin Hendrich, defence:

The Wolfsburg player's opening of the game was sometimes imprecise.

Hendrich received a few balls and helped a lot against the French attacking game, which hardly developed for a long time.

Until the 45th minute: She couldn't keep up against Kadidiatou Diani, allowed a shot and the unfortunate 1-1 came about.

In the second half she also looked unhappy when Diani had a big chance.

Marina Hegering, defense (up to the 81st minute):

The 32-year-old symbolizes Germany's defensive strength at this European Championship.

She underlined that again, even if she came into the game a bit unlucky with one or two bad passes.

After that, she coordinated her neighbors with confidence, and from time to time you could see how Hegering even made long trips into the opposing half.

That speaks for their great self-confidence in this tournament.

Sara Doorsoun, defense (from the 81st minute):

She came on for the apparently injured Hegering, it wasn't an easy job.

But the woman from Frankfurt remained calm.

Felicitas Rauch, defence:

Rauch had the strongest opponent in a one-on-one in France's pace player Diani.

But if you saw smoke near the ball, it was often from set pieces, corner kicks or free kicks she was taking.

On the defensive, she didn't come under pressure for a long time.

From the second half, Diani turned up the heat, the combative smoke didn't always keep up.

Lena Oberdorf, midfielder:

The woman from Wolfsburg said before the duel that she needed one or two duels before she could get into the game.

Oberdorf was able to win the first duel in an impressive way - and then she was really involved in the game.

She built up like a wall in front of the defense.

Oberdorf straddled, she won aerial duels, her duels should get a place in the DFB Museum.

With a bit of bad luck, Oberdorf could have seen yellow early for her robust nature, possibly even red in the final phase. She still has to get a grip on this sometimes exaggerated hardness.

Nevertheless, at the age of 20, Oberdorf is already an integral part of the team.

Sara Däbritz, midfield (up to the 68th minute):

Däbritz plays for a club in France, most recently at Paris Saint-Germain and in the future in Lyon.

She knows the French internationals and seemed keen to compete against them.

The midfielder supported the defense with great passion and often came on as an additional player in a duel.

She was not entirely uninvolved in the development of the 1:1 when she was too far away from a pass with a header.

Sydney Lohmann, midfield (from the 68th minute):

She is so calm on the ball and has a good overview.

Lohmann came into play and showed these qualities directly.

Shortly before the 2:1 she had initiated the German attack with a side shift.

Lohmann chased a lot of balls on the defensive.

Your efforts have paid off.

Lina Magull, midfield (up to the 68th minute):

She often met Wendie Renard in the penalty area, but of course she didn't have an easy game against the 1.87 meter tall defender.

Sometimes there was light physical contact between the two, but not enough for a penalty.

As the game progressed, Magull continued to lose ground, she lost a few duels and this time she was unable to recall her brilliant moments from previous games.

Linda Dallmann, midfield (from the 68th minute):

The Bayern player had to work a lot against the ball.

Shortly before the end of the game she had the 3:1 on her feet, and actually she should have scored from such close range.

Jule Brand, attack:

The top talent replaced the corona-infected Klara Bühl - a big task for the 19-year-old.

Brand handled them impressively and was extremely active.

In the 20th minute, she marched through midfield with good movements and showed why she got the Bühl starting place.

During the action, the future Wolfsburg woman got a free kick, which should provide the first major goal threat of the German selection.

Brand was also involved in the 1-0 with the penultimate pass.

A strong performance.

Svenja Huth, Attack (up to the 90th minute):

When the Wolfsburg player got the ball, the pace picked up.

But Brand often played down the right side and Huth seemed bored.

Before the 1-0, the Wolfsburg player switched to the right and crossed from there softly into the penalty area to Popp.

Huth also prepared the 2:1.

Before the EM it was said that the 31-year-old was in the form of her life.

Now you know that's true.

Tabea Waßmuth, attack (left, from the 90th minute):

She should help to get the long stoppage time of five minutes over time.

She succeeded.

Alexandra Popp, Attack:

Two goals, one with a header, in a game against Wendie Renard?

No problem for Popp, and that already says how great this evening was for the attacker.

If you only look at the goals she scored at the European Championship, it is easy to conclude that Popp should be regarded as a pure penalty area striker.

She also scored her fifth and sixth EM goal in the penalty area.

But Popp's range of motion is much larger, as always, the Wolfsburg woman ran a lot and tried to open up space for her teammates.

England have great players, but Popp is also on the way to becoming the player at this tournament.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, national coach:

The coach took a risk and bet on the inexperienced Jule Brand in the semifinals of the European Championship, in such a big game.

This measure turned out to be a hit.

She gave her selection a lot of security with clear processes, and Voss-Tecklenburg brought Popp back to his old top form with her coaching team.

The national coach would like to extend her contract until 2027.

There's nothing wrong with that.
