The German soccer players have reached the final of the European Championship in England.
The team of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg prevailed in the semi-finals in Milton Keynes 2:1 (1:1) against France and now meets hosts England at the sold-out Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
The international press reviews:
France
»L'Équipe«
: »Popp top, Périsset absent (...) The German captain was eagerly awaited and did not disappoint.
With a brace, her fifth and sixth goal of the tournament, Popp confirmed the breadth of her immense talent.
She was perfectly accompanied by Huth, who was the decisive passer in both German goals.«
»Libération«:
»The French do not pass the German crash test in the semifinals.
With her brace, the German striker Alexandra Popp was their tormentor.«
»Le Monde«:
»Germany ends France's dream of a final.
(...) The summer dream of the first international title in their history was extinguished by Germany in the semifinals of the European Championship.
(...) The French women will remember the name of Alexandra Popp from this tournament for a long time.«
»Le Figaro«:
»The blue dream of the first finale is over.
(...) As at the 2011 World Cup or the 2012 Olympic Games, the French stumbled just one step away from a major international final.
In a game that paradoxically eluded them just when Germany seemed to be in the most trouble.
A cruel scenario.«
»Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace«:
»And in the end Germany wins.
While men have managed to put an end to this old adage for a number of years, French women footballers will have to be patient.«
ENGLAND
»The Guardian«:
»England against Germany, in the final of the European Championship, in the sold-out Wembley Stadium.
Loved hated, it's a game that captures the attention of the host nation like no other, in any sport, in any arena.
With all the breathtaking moments that England's players have experienced on their way to the final, there will be no one quite like Popp at Wembley on Sunday.
Popp is unstoppable.«
»Daily Mail«:
»Here come the Germans!
England meet a familiar opponent in the final of the Euro 2022 on Sunday after the eight-time European champions beat France 2-1 with two relentlessly completed goals from Alexandra Popp.”
»Evening Standard«:
»Germany delivers again on the big stage.
Just a month ago, Popp seemed to have a cursed relationship with this competition.
Now, thanks to their goals, Germany is just one win away from reclaiming the title.«
»The Sun«: »
POPP STAR –
England meet Germany in the EURO final after captain Alexandra Popp gave her side a two-goal lead against France (...) On Sunday, the weekend of the 56th anniversary of the 1966 men's World Cup final between the two countries, the Germans will try to beat the hosts and win their ninth European title.«
SWEDEN
»Aftonbladet«
: »Alexandra Popp is on the way to becoming the great queen of the EM.«
»Expressen«
: »Not even an own goal by the goalkeeper could stop Germany.
Alexandra Popp became the game's heroine when France were defeated 2-1.
Now a classic awaits against England in the final.«
SVT
: »Germany is ready for the European Championship final in Wembley.
This is thanks to Alexandra Popp, who has now entered the history books.«
DENMARK
DR:
“Finals call for great players and great nations.
It will be the best against the best when England and Germany meet at Wembley.”
