She fought, but it wasn't nearly enough: Julia Rath experienced a 3,000-meter steeplechase that failed for her at the U20 World Championships in Colombia.

Penzberg/Cali – Julia Rath fought her way down the blue tartan track with a strained facial expression, but it wasn’t enough: the 18-year-old athlete from Penzberg is in the preliminary round over the 3000 at the U20 World Championships in Cali (Colombia) early Monday evening German time meter obstacle eliminated.

Rath finished eleventh after 11:16.69 minutes and was also the last athlete of her run.

In view of the entry list, the 18-year-old was only an outsider for a place in the final anyway.

At the start were the world's best in this age group, above all Sembo Almayew (17) from Ethiopia, who ran the distance this year in 9:09.19 minutes and is sixth in the overall world rankings.

Germany's best woman, Gesa Felicitas Krause, has a best time of the season of 9:21.02 minutes (23rd place).

Julia Rath qualified for the U20 World Cup with a time of 10:24.27 minutes.

The Penzberg native started in the second heat, but was far from being able to fight for the final.

In the stadium in Cali - the place is almost 1100 meters above sea level - Rath had to fight from the start and soon found himself at the bottom of the field of 13 athletes.

From the two heats, the first five plus five “fastest” progressed.

The second German in the field, Carolin Hinrichs, made it to the final in fifth place (10:34.57) in the second heat.

Faith Cherotich (Kenya) won the heat in 9:38.18 minutes.

She achieved the best time in both heats.

The last athlete to qualify by time was Romania's Mihaela Maria Blaga (10:37.77/seventh place first heat).

The final will take place on Thursday.
