Spain's Garbine Muguruza, ranked eighth in the world, has decided to withdraw from the San Jose Championships in the United States, which begins today, due to injury, to be replaced by Russian Veronika Kudretova, who will meet Italian Camila Giorgi.
"Unfortunately, Muguruza withdrew from the tournament due to an injury," the tournament's organizing committee said in a statement. "We wish her a speedy recovery and to see her next year."
The 28-year-old, the fifth candidate for the championship title, which continues until next Sunday, played her last match at Wimbledon last month when she fell to the 99th world ranked Belgium's Gret Minin in the first round in a heavy surprise.
