The Olympic gold medalist in judo and the former president of the Mongolian National Olympic Committee (MNOC), Naidangyain Tubshibayar, was sentenced today (Monday) to 16 years in prison for murder.
A court in Ulaanbaatar's Khan-Ul district jailed Tobshinbayar for killing a childhood friend after a year-long trial that shook the nation, Sonin news agency reported.
Tobshinbayar assaulted fellow judoka Arandbilg Enhbat under the influence of alcohol on April 2, 2021, with a heavy object, leaving him hospitalized with brain injuries that ultimately led to Enhbat's death a short time later.
The 38-year-old Tobshinbayar won a gold medal for men's judo up to 100 kg in Beijing 2008, which was his country's first gold medal, followed by silver in London 2012. As mentioned, he also served as the president of the Mongolian National Olympic Committee, elected to the position in August 2020.
In April 2021, Tobshinbayar resigned from the position after being imprisoned for 20 days, when only a year later the elections for a permanent president were held.
