Summary of England's 1:2 victory over Germany in the Women's Euro final (Sport1)

A year after the painful loss at Wembley in the men's European Championship final, English football closed a circle yesterday (Sunday).

12 months after the men's team surrendered on penalties to Italy, it was the women's team on the same field that won the Euro for the first time in its history with a 2:1 over Germany after extra time.

Alongside the impressive sporting achievement that may promote women's football in the Kingdom, in England they were enthusiastic and amused by the additional skills displayed by the players.

The first hidden talent revealed during the game is the players' ability to peek at their opponents' notes.

The first to do so was Alessia Russo, who endeared herself to the local crowd already in the semi-finals when she scored an unexpected goal with her heel.

When a German player came up from the bench with a tactical message that she passed between the players, Russo went next to one of them and tried to read the text.

"This is comedy at its best, we hope she understands German," the networks joked.

After England took the lead in extra time, the Germans made another substitution to try and drag the final to a decider from the penalty spot, and then it was Ella Ton who tried to sneak a peek at the Germans' note.

What is certain is that the message conveyed in the notes did not help - and Germany surrendered in the Euro final for the first time, after in their eight previous visits to the final they also lifted the trophy.

In addition to that, the English were praised for their ability to waste time starting from scoring the winning goal in the 110th minute until the final whistle.

Since Chloe Kelly's goal, the English mostly kept the ball near the corner flag, and the heat map of those minutes also shows how England manages to prevent Germany from getting close to their goal.

The Germans committed silly fouls in their half of the court that only served the purpose of the incoming champion.

"It's a glorious waste of time," they joked in the kingdom, "the last five minutes are a waste of time at the level of Atlético Madrid."

And if that wasn't enough, then in the kingdom they analyzed minute by minute, move by move, how the English pulled off the final minutes, which included an offside that took no less than 26 seconds.

The Germans left not only frustrated from the final, but also with a sense of deprivation.

In the 25th minute, a hand touch by the English captain Leah Williamson was not considered by the Ukrainian referee Kateryna Monzul.

After the game, a team from the German "Bild" who were present at the stadium approached the referee and tried to ask for an explanation of the decision, but they did not receive one and were ignored by Monzul.

The "Bild" also approached the fourth Italian referee Paolo Valeri and asked for an explanation in Italian.

Valerie's answer in his own language was "I can't say anything, sorry."

The feeling of deprivation was only echoed by the losing coach, Martins Fus Steklenburg, who said: "This kind of thing shouldn't happen at this level. I want them to deal with it - don't scroll through this case. Why aren't they looking at the case, why is there no communication?"
