The "50+1" rule of the Bundesliga has been heating up tempers for a long time.

BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke explains why, in contrast to FC Bayern, he advocates retention.

Frankfurt/Dortmund – Hans-Joachim Watzke often offends with controversial statements.

In an interview with

kicker

, the BVB CEO comments on various topics relating to Borussia Dortmund and the overall development of the Bundesliga.

As far as the topic of "50+1" is concerned, the managing director of the listed club is confronting Bayern Munich's CEO Oliver Kahn.

For the 63-year-old, abolishing the 50+1 rule remains taboo.

The head of the supervisory board of the German Football League (DFL) is also opposing the concerns of the German record champions, who would like to open the Bundesliga to investors in the struggle for more attractiveness and competition.

For Watzke, such ambitions are neither "comprehensible" nor "stringent".

Watzke expresses the opinion that the Bundesliga would be more democratic with the current regulation because this codetermination is "so deeply rooted in our society" that abolishing it would, according to him, cause "deep upheavals".

Dortmund's club boss also explains: "On the other hand, it would be much more expensive for the fan, I don't want that.

In Germany, thank God, football is still the glue of society.” The example of Real Madrid would show that a 50+1 club could be just as successful – “Even if people laugh about it when I call Real Madrid a 50+1 club.”

A few weeks ago, Watzke drew criticism from former FC Bayern boss Uli Hoeneß, who advocated the abolition of "50+1".

The BVB boss is a "brake":

Watzke: FC Liverpool as a role model for Dortmund, FC Bayern and Co.

One means of gaining a better reputation (and thus higher income, ed.) is TV marketing abroad.

The league "honestly hasn't really started to exploit our potential yet," says Watzke: "If we want to increase our foreign revenue in the long term and to a significant extent, then we can't avoid showing our presence," says the 63rd player -year-olds.

From the coming season, every Bundesliga club and numerous second division clubs would have to "go out into the core markets".

According to him, these are “the USA, Asia, maybe someday Australia too”.

The BVB boss named Liverpool FC as a role model.

“Jürgen Klopp and his team are on the plane for 23 hours.

This is the way.

We as Borussia Dortmund will also go on tour again in the future.

Like the Munich team now, for which they can only be praised.” FC Bayern was on a trip to the USA in the summer.

"In times of globalization, you can't isolate yourself nationally," said Watzke, especially since the economic competitive disadvantage compared to the state and oligarch clubs, especially the Premier League, has increased again as a result of the corona pandemic.

FC Bayern dominance: 2022/23 another champion?

Watzke thinks so

Hans-Joachim Watzke also commented on more tension in the title fight and the chances of FC Bayern pursuers in the new season: However, he does not believe that clubs like Dortmund, RB Leipzig or Bayer Leverkusen can declare war on the series champion together: " Everyone is responsible for themselves.

You can't form a cartel against FC Bayern."

On the other hand, the 63-year-old then explains that the FCB rivals should at least try to pull together: "The clubs must all try to ensure that the title does not jump out of the role of favorites again." That at some point there would be another champion than Bayern Munich, be sure.

"But not necessarily in 2022/23," explains Watzke.

Recently, a debate about possible playoffs in the Bundesliga had flared up.

Oliver Kahn is open to such a rule change.
