The Canadian player disposed of the American Venus Williams in three sets (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) on Monday, during the first round of the Washington tournament.
“
I would have liked to succeed in this match for the public and for the tournament.
But it doesn't always work.
I was good in the third set, but I was a little rusty as well.
It's normal.
All I can do now is play another tournament and get better
,” Williams said after his loss.
Unranked at the WTA and now 42 years old, Venus Williams played her first singles match in the American capital in over a year.
The Saginaw native is expected to take part in tournaments in Toronto (starting next Monday) and Cincinnati (August 15-21).
