That went quickly: A few days after Sebastian Vettel's resignation, Aston Martin signed a successor.

Silverstone - Fernando Alonso will drive next year as the successor to Sebastian Vettel for Aston Martin in Formula 1.

The British racing team announced the change of the now 41-year-old world champion from 2005 and 2006 on Monday.

Alonso got a contract for several years, it was said.

The Spaniard is still driving for the French Alpine team this season.

"I still have the hunger and the ambition to fight at the top," he emphasized.

Alonso will drive alongside Lance Stroll, son of team co-owner Lawrence Stroll.

The cockpit will be free because Vettel will end his career at the age of 35 after this season.

The racing team is "delighted to bring Fernando's incredible experience and brilliant speed" to the team and underscored its ambitions of wanting to develop a "winning car" in Formula 1.

So far, the comeback of the British racing team in Formula 1 has not gone as desired - one of the reasons why Vettel gave up his helmet.

"I have known Lawrence and Lance

for many years now and it is obvious that they have the ambition to triumph in Formula 1," Alonso is quoted as saying in the press release.

The Spaniard is convinced that no other team can offer him a greater vision.

Even if these words sound a bit pompous in view of the team's current performance: They are not entirely unrealistic.

A lot is happening at Aston Martin - especially because billionaire Lawrence Stroll is investing considerable sums.

Numerous well-known engineers were recruited from other teams to develop the 2023 car, and what is probably the most modern factory in Formula 1 will start at Silverstone next year.

So, with Alonso's advanced age obviously not affecting his speed, it's not impossible that he could have some success with Aston Martin in the future.

Meanwhile, Ferrari fails again at the Hungarian GP because of its own claims.

Heads could roll during the summer break.
