Runners on the ground, bib shorts torn, burns, scrapes and bikes strewn on the sides of the road after crashing into the safety barriers.
The runaway of the peloton in the last kilometer of the second stage of the Tour of Burgos between Vivar del Cid and Villadiego ended with an impressive collective fall trapping a dozen riders on the mat.
In single file, the Jumbo-Visma was setting a hellish pace when the peloton started crossing a speed bump.
David Dekker, the third rider of the Dutch team, that of the winner of the Tour de France Jonas Vingegaard, was unbalanced while passing the obstacle on the road.
His fall, at around 65km/h, caused that of several runners in his wake.
Others, who tried to avoid competitors on the ground by moving to the sides, left the road before going to crash into the barriers in front of frightened spectators deviating.
Damien Touzé, the rider of the AG2R-Citroën team fell heavily.
Conscious, he was transported to the hospital.
David Dekker, the first to fall, was able to join his team's bus suffering from multiple burns all over his body.
Speed bumps, fear of runners before sprints
Arrivals in built-up areas are very often dreaded by very nervous runners when the teams are preparing for the final sprint.
But the presence of a speed bump 500 meters from the finish raises questions even if the obstacle was signaled by the presence of two marshals on the sides of the road.
The victory, anecdotal in such circumstances, went to Luxembourger Timo Roosen, winner of the sprint between the three survivors of the Jumbo Visma team who scored a hat-trick.
But at what cost…
