Thanks to strong nerves and great stamina, decathlete Julian Meyer from TuS Geretsried won the silver medal at the Bavarian Championships in Friedberg.
Friedberg/Geretsried – In order to be among the front runners in a decathlon, you need versatility, strong nerves and, above all, stamina.
Julian Meyer from TuS Geretsried was able to demonstrate exactly these qualities at the Bavarian all-around championships in Friedberg.
After ten disciplines and two days of competition, the 24-year-old received the silver medal.
The start was over the 100 meter distance.
As in his last 100-meter runs, the athlete just cracked the twelve-second mark, but struggled a bit with the acceleration phase after his 11.96 seconds.
The all-around athlete also stayed on target in the long jump, where he improved to 5.90 meters after a moderate start.
Meyer then set his first real highlight in the shot put.
In his "well hit" second attempt, he increased his personal best to 11.28 meters.
A welcome cushion, especially since the shaky discipline, the high jump, continued.
Although 1.63 meters meant the best performance of the season, it is still not satisfactory overall.
"It's definitely the discipline with the most potential for the next season," the athlete announced an imminent improvement.
With 52.81 seconds over 400 meters, Meyer finished the first day of competition properly: in second place and 57 points behind his personal best.
Sunday began with a somewhat bumpy but ultimately successful 110-meter hurdles in 17.64 seconds.
“I didn't hit the first hurdle properly, that was much better in the warm-up.
I touched or knocked over many hurdles," he complained.
After a decent 28.87 meters in the discus throw, Meyer really got going.
The 24-year-old pole vaulted 3.70 meters for the first time, even though things were far from going smoothly.
“It was a nail-biter because I only managed one height on the first try.
The personal best was really cool,” he said with relief.
It went even better with the javelin throw, where Meyer even came dangerously close to the 50-meter mark and reached 49.26 meters.
"As soon as I dropped it, I noticed that the throw was good, and when it flew and flew I knew that it had to be a new personal best," he said happily.
With this litter at the latest, Meyer's second place was practically impossible to take.
Knowing this, the TuS athlete wanted to attack his best time of 4:35 minutes over 1500 meters.
He just missed this in 4:37 minutes, which ultimately wasn't too bad.
Silver and a best performance improved by almost 200 points to 5776 points were reason enough to celebrate.
In the coming year it should go even higher.
"The goal is already set with 6200 points," the decathlete says confidently.
That would be the qualification standard for the German championship.
