A month packed with Olympic sports events, opened tonight (between Thursday and Friday) in the best possible way, with the victory of the sprinter Blessing Afripa in the 200 meter race, at the under-20 world championship held in Colombia. 

The 18-year-old Afrifa will take the podium tonight (11:30 p.m.) to receive the gold medal and play the national anthem, and those who were elated by the achievement were the Israeli Olympic Committee.

"The Olympic Committee congratulates Blessing Afrifa, Yigal Balon, the Athletics Association and the Maccabi Tel Aviv Association for winning the gold medal at the World Youth Championship with the incredible record of the Israeli athlete," said CEO Gili Lustig. 

"This achievement joins the world and European gold of Yonatan Kapitolnik, our high jumper, from 2021 and testifies to the great potential of Israeli talents. "Significant investment in these ages is the engine of our growth, so it is important to implement the plans of the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic Committee and transfer budgets through the unit for high-achieving sports that will deepen the investment. With 15 million NIS per year we can give in-depth support to hundreds of young athletes so that in 2028 they will stand on the podium." 

"Between youth success and adult Olympic success, the road is physically and mentally long and requires significant professional guidance along with the accumulation of extensive competitive experience. And the cooperation between the associations and unions, the Olympic Committee and the unit for accomplished sports already at these ages produces an optimal process and we are very proud of that," Lustig added.

"Blessing Afripa's result is ranked 15th in the world for graduates, which earns him entry into the Olympic silver squad (6,000 NIS per month), and a grant from a joint fund of the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic Committee in the amount of 10,000 NIS and his coach 5,000 NIS.

In two weeks, Blessing will compete in the European Senior Championships in Munich and his result is the best in Europe this year.
