Transfer market: how French clubs are adapting to a market disrupted by successive crises

After a largely profitable balance of transfers during the 2018-2019 season (with +278 million euros in profits on exchanges with other countries), Ligue 1 clubs have since seen the situation reverse, with two loss-making years on this point: -92 million euros in 2019-2020 then -81 million euros in 2020-2021.

The Covid and the Mediapro affair strain the situation of French clubs

The Covid crisis and Brexit, to a lesser extent, have disrupted the situation in a vital market for French clubs.

Especially since the fiasco of the Mediapro affair cornered the clubs financially.

Lured by the prospect of a substantial increase in TV rights, the LFP (Professional Football League) has abandoned its usual partners (Canal+ in the lead) in favor of the Sino-Spanish operator.

After a call for tenders, Mediapro won the bulk of domestic TV rights for the 2020-2021 to 2023-2024 seasons for the record sum of 1.153 billion euros per year.
