UEFA announced today (Friday) that starting from the group stage in the Champions League this season, the refereeing team will start using the new VAR system, the semi-automatic differential system.
In the new system, the VAR referees will not have to manually draw lines across the field or decide when the ball was kicked and left the leg in order to determine if it was different.
Instead, there will be a sensor inside the game ball that will automatically detect when a kick has been made and send signals at 500 times per second, while all players will be mapped using special cameras that track 29 different body points for each player, to create an AI model of their position.
