The star of the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James is expected to sign a contract extension with the team from California, it was reported today (Saturday) in the United States.
"All signs point to both parties looking to expand their partnership together," ESPN said in a release.
"It has already led to one championship in 2020, and two appearances in the playoffs where they did not reach the later stages."
"Overall, both sides understand that they can help each other reach their mutual goal, which is to win a championship and remain relevant, both as one of the best players in the NBA and as one of the best teams in the league."
James is eligible to sign a two-year, $97.1 million contract extension with the Lakers.
The Lakers superstar will become an unrestricted free agent if he does not sign an extension by June 30, 2023. The 37-year-old is in the final year of his $44.5 million contract.
The maximum length of a contract a player 38 or older can sign is two years, according to the NBA's collective bargaining agreement.
The 4-time NBA champion may be able to opt out of his $47 million contract after one year for 2023-24, with an additional year with a player option for 2024-25, so he has an option on a team with his eldest son, Ronnie, who will be eligible to join the NBA in 2024.
Last season, the former NBA MVP averaged 30.3 points per game, becoming the oldest player ever to average at least 30 points per game.
He also averaged 8.2 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game.
