Brittany Griner, the American basketball star, was found guilty of drug smuggling in Russia and was sentenced to nine years in prison, in addition to the six months she had already spent in detention in Moscow.

Stephen Curry, the star of Golden State, also stood by Griner's side and said: "It's beyond sports at this point, me and all my colleagues said what we thought out loud."
"We need to continue to keep her name in the media, and make sure she feels loved and supported. Unfortunately, it's such a helpless situation when you think about what she's going through. The right people are putting pressure on me and I hope it works out soon."
