After it was announced that the French government feared an attack during the Olympic Games, CNN reported that a special prototype of a system that could deal with the threat had been ordered

It may sound like some science fiction movie, but the local government commissioned a laser defense system to protect the upcoming Olympics from drones. One of the proposed methods to combat the issue is the use of a laser defense system. According to a CNN report, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces Ordered in June one prototype of the defense tool known as HELMA-P.

Just two weeks ago it was written in a report commissioned by the French police that there is great concern about a drone attack at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics, it seems that the solution has been found.

"The HELMA-P system provides a response to the threat of the drone, from blinding the drone's observation devices to completely neutralizing it by changing its structure, causing it to fall within a few seconds," the ministry said.

Jean, a French chief military engineer, said the anti-drone system can fire powerful laser beams that can burn or heat up and shut down its engine. The defense system developed by CILAS will be equipped with radar and radio frequency sensors to help detect drones .

The engineer revealed that the weapon has a lethal range of one kilometer, and warned that it should be used with caution, especially over a dense population.

The spokesperson of the International Olympic Committee said that it is the responsibility of the local authorities to decide on the security measures for the games.

Other security concerns at Paris 2024 have heightened since the chaotic scenes at the UEFA Champions League final at the Stade de France in May, where the police tactic of using tear gas on Liverpool fans was widely criticised.

A report by the French Senate last month acknowledged that the scenes "called into question France's ability to organize major sporting events." In a recent meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach expressed confidence in the French security operation.

The Paris Olympics are scheduled to be held between July 26 and August 11, 2024.
