SV Werder Bremen scored a point on the first day of the new Bundesliga season.

At VfL Wolfsburg, coach Ole Werner's team drew 2-2 after a 2-1 half-time lead.

The game report of the DeichStube.

Wolfsburg - The heads hung briefly, after all, victory was within reach.

Exactly 441 days after

SV Werder Bremen

were relegated, it was "only" enough

for a 2-2 (2-1) win at

VfL Wolfsburg when they returned to the

Bundesliga

.

After a sometimes furious first half, coach Ole Werner's team didn't manage to take the lead - which, among other things, plunged Amos Pieper into a little emotional chaos.

"I accept the congratulations on the performance," he said afterwards, "the result is not entirely satisfactory."

Werder Bremen started the new Bundesliga season with a draw at VfL Wolfsburg

Werder coach Ole Werner relied on his 3-5-2 system, tried and tested from the promotion season, for his

Bundesliga

premiere, but changed the starting line-up by two positions compared to the 2-1 victory in the DFB Cup against Energie Cottbus.

Romano Schmid, who was infected with Corona, was replaced by newcomer Jens Stage in midfield at

Werder Bremen

, while Anthony Jung ousted young Lee Buchanan on the left flank after thigh problems had healed.

At

VfL Wolfsburg

, meanwhile, ex-Werder captain Max Kruse was initially on the bench.

In front of around 28,000 spectators in the Volkswagen Arena and without the Werder Ultras - after a large and heavily criticized police action at the Wolfsburg train station, hundreds of fans drove back without visiting the stadium -

Werder Bremen

got off to a fiery and violent start.

Marvin Ducksch appeared twice in front of

VfL Wolfsburg

keeper Koen Casteels after just a few seconds, but did not finish.

No question: Werder seemed highly motivated and wide awake.

But then the

Bundesliga

showed its brutal side.

Werder Bremen against VfL Wolfsburg: Niclas Füllkrug and Leonardo Bittencourt turn the game around

With the first reasonable attack,

VfL Wolfsburg

proved its class.

Patrick Wimmer leveraged the entire Bremen defense around new captain Marco Friedl with a brilliant through pass, Lukas Nmecha broke away and scooped the ball over goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka into the goal – 0:1 (11th).

The cold shower!

Werder Bremen

shook themselves – but only briefly.

And then came back powerful.

Niclas Füllkrug settled down in the left half-space, was hardly attacked and put an almost flat beam into the far corner to equalize (21st).

Werder Bremen

was back and immediately followed up.

A Ducksch cross from the half-field found Leonardo Bittencourt, who was only 1.71 meters tall, and who was unmarked in the penalty area, moving backwards and falling with an ice-cold header (23').

Suddenly it was 2:1, Werder turned the game around in just two minutes - and could have continued to play again afterwards.

Example one: Ducksch forwarded a long ball from Amos Pieper directly to Füllkrug, but his demanding acceptance with his outside instep went to the side netting (37').

Example two: Ducksch was sent on his way and goes steeply in the direction of the goal, but his cross pass to Füllkrug was intercepted by a Wolfsburg leg (46').

Then there was a break in a really lively game in which Bremen also made a stable defensive impression

VfL Wolfsburg

could hardly develop and often stood directly on the hosts' feet.

Werder Bremen against VfL Wolfsburg: Clear chances remained scarce shortly after the change of sides

VfL coach Niko Kovac reacted with two changes, Josuha Guilavogui (46th) and Jonas Wind (56th) came into the game, Max Kruse, who was not yet at 100 percent after a calf injury and a flu infection, initially had to keep watching.

The

Bundesliga

twelfth last year increasingly took control of the game, but clear chances were scarce at first.

On the other side, Ducksch was free twice in a short space of time, but once keeper Casteels got the ball in front of him (64'), the other time the

Werder Bremen

striker's attempt to lift the ball didn't work (65').

Nico Schulz "denies the allegations": BVB publishes a statement on the ad

Wolfsburg continued to change their staff - and substitute Jakub Kaminski almost introduced himself with a lightning goal.

But after a strong pass from Maximilian Arnold, Pavlenka rushed out and saved the shot (68th).

Lower Saxony subsequently established themselves more and more in the Bremen half,

Werder Bremen

's pressing was not as successful as it was in the first half.

Werder coach Werner brought fresh strength to Lee Buchanan (for Jung), Nicolai Rapp (for Bittencourt) and Felix Agu (for Weiser), after a hit to the thigh Niclas Füllkrug had to give way, he limped off, Oliver Burke came into the party.

VfL

Wolfsburg

meanwhile built up further pressure - after 75 minutes Max Kruse also got his appearance.

Substitute Josuha Guilavogui scored a late equalizer for VfL Wolfsburg against Werder Bremen

And finally had his feet in the game, which finally became unavoidable: When Kruse crossed, Nmecha extended a head and

Josuha Guilavogui

completed, Pavlenka was beaten - the 2-2 equalizer (84th).

Werder didn't give up, Ducksch fired again from the second row, but his shot went just wide of the goal (89').

There were four minutes of overtime, Werder were closer to the lucky punch at the end, but the ball didn't want to go in the goal.

It was a tie and the first points of the

Bundesliga

season

each went to

Werder

Bremen

and

VfL Wolfsburg

.

"We didn't allow much, but then you see at 2-2 that carelessness is sometimes enough to concede a goal," said

Ole Werner

after the final whistle.

"In the end, however, there is still a good performance." Overall, the Werder coach drew a lot of positive things from the first appearance of the season: "I think that we saw today that you can fundamentally deal with the way we play football want to play, can play games successfully.” His team now has to prove that week after week.

The second ball lands on Pieper, who finds Ducksch with a long ball.

Filling krug cannot accommodate the cross in the goal, the angle was too acute.

The very attentive Pieper heads an Arnold cross in front of Wimmer to the corner in dire need.

It brings nothing.

11 minutes: Goal for Wolfsburg.

Nmecha meets.

But now the hosts: Brekalo has a lot of space on the left and moves into the sixteen.

He passes the ball sharply into the middle, where Stage slides the ball out of the danger zone for Werder.

9 min:

Werder shows a very good playful approach here in the first few minutes.

Handball is claimed, but the Wolfsburg player was only there with his chest.

1. Min: Stegemann releases the game, Werder is officially back on the Bundesliga stage!

Werder Bremen vs. VfL Wolfsburg in the live ticker: the game is on!

3.30 p.m .:

Captains Friedl and Arnold clarify who starts where and high five.

3:28 p.m.:

... and here they come!

Led by referee Sascha Stegemann, both teams enter the field!

Wolfsburg plays in green jerseys, Werder in the salmon-colored away jerseys.

3:27 p.m .:

The teams are ready in the player tunnel.

Soon it will start!

3:22 p.m .: Let

’s see how many Werderers will be in the stadium right away.

3,000 tickets have been sold, 5,000 people from Bremen were expected, but some of them have returned home to protest against police measures in Wolfsburg.

3:14 p.m .:

The overall balance of both teams gives reason for hope: In the league and cup, both teams met 54 times, Werder won 25 games, 20 victories are on the credit side at Wolfsburg.

Nine games have not found a winner.

3:12 p.m .:

Ole Werner took a close look at the opponent: “We have to be more compact in defensive behavior than in the 2nd division, but we want to play our football when we have the ball.

Wolfsburg has good organization against the ball, good pace and is dangerous with set pieces," says the coach on the Sky microphones.

3:08 p.m .:

We have to look far back in history until we find a Werder opening victory in the championship: in 2013 Bremen won 1-0 at Eintracht Braunschweig.

This was followed by a number of defeats, some of them heavy.

But we don't want to paint the devil on the wall today.

Every series breaks at some point!

3:03 p.m .:

As already mentioned, Bremen has successfully started the 2022/23 season.

The fall was high in the 2-1 victory in the DFB Cup against the regional league team Energie Cottbus, but Ole Werner's team withstood the pressure of the embarrassment potential.

Wolfsburg also won against a regional league club in the first round of the cup: Carl-Zeiss Jena put up a big fight, but Wolfsburg retained the upper hand 1-0.

2:56 p.m .:

The following gentlemen are probably a little more impartial than the majority of our readers: Sascha Stegemann leads the game, he is supported by Christof Günsch and Frederick Assmuth on the sidelines.

Fourth official is Frank Willenborg, Benjamin Brand and Norbert Grudzinski are glued to the video screens.

2:50 p.m .:

It’s been 441 days since Werder was last allowed to play in the first division (2: 4 against Borussia Mönchengladbach).

Now it's finally time again.

However, Wolfsburg hasn't been good recently: we have to skip three defeats in a row before a Bremen win (3-2 on December 1, 2019 in Wolfsburg) appears in the table.

VfL Wolfsburg

.

But the 34-year-old simply doesn't like this focus on himself: "It's not about me, it's just about achieving the goals of the club and the team.

That's what I work for.” (kni) Have you read it?
