Cycling: cervical fracture and end of the season for Tiesj Benoot, Vingegaard's teammate


Involved in a violent accident in training on Italian roads, the Belgian rider from Jumbo-Visma will miss the Worlds.

The end of Tiesj Benoot's season came prematurely.

This Monday, the Belgian cyclist suffered a violent accident during training in Livigno in Italy.

Despite many concerns about his state of health, the Jumbo-Visma rider reassured on Tuesday, explaining that he suffered from a "small fracture" cervical.

Benoot will therefore be absent from the Worlds in Australia at the end of September.

Faithful teammate of the winner of the Tour de France Jonas Vingegaard and the green jersey Wout van Aert, the Belgian rider had participated in making the Jumbo-Visma shine on the roads of France.

His injury is a blow for the team in view of the approaching World Championships.

On July 30, he took 3rd place in the Clasica San Sebastián, won by his compatriot Remco Evenepoel.

On Monday, Tiesj Benoot was hit by a car while training in Italy.

He wanted to reassure about the stability of his state of health: “First, I want to tell everyone that I am fine.

I was involved in an accident in the Italian Alps.

I am in the hospital where I am receiving good treatment.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, examinations have shown that I suffer from a small neck injury. I have never been in a life-threatening situation, ”explained the Flemish.

“For the next few weeks, I will be completely focused on my recovery.
