In a text in Vogue magazine, Serena Williams announced the end of her tennis career.
Literally, she wrote that she was "evolving away from tennis."
She hinted at retiring from the sport, which she dominated for much of her career with 23 Grand Slam singles titles.
"I've never liked the word resignation," Williams wrote.
“It doesn't feel like a modern word to me.
I see this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use this word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people.”
“Perhaps the best word to describe what I intend to do is evolution.
I'm here to tell you that I'm evolving away from tennis and towards other things that are important to me."
