Israel's top swimmer is aiming high for the competition that will begin in Rome: "This year I expected more from myself, I hope I will prove it"

The 36th European Swimming Championships will start tomorrow (Thursday) in Rome, the capital of Italy, and once again the eyes will be on Israel's top swimmer in the sport - Anastasia Gorbenko.

Gorbenko, who just celebrated her 19th birthday at the beginning of the week, will come with the goal of defending her title from last year, after she stunned in the 200 meter individual medley and won the gold medal in the competition held in Budapest.

"My goal is to try to break my record," said the swimmer about the goal she set for the championship, "this year I still haven't been able to do it in the races I've swum so far. I feel very good in the water and I'm very excited for the championship."

You had a long season like most swimmers, how did you deal with it?

"It's a very long season, we're really not used to it in swimming, but again, I look at the positive side that we have a lot of competitions, not something that happened during the Corona period. It was very nice to set the record achievement - fifth place in the World Championships for an Israeli swimmer, but I expected more from myself I hope I will prove it in the upcoming championship."

The one who also commented on the long season that is now reaching its peak, here in Rome, is the national team coach Ehud Segal: "The confusion is beyond the Corona year, our annual competition schedule has been completely turned upside down. We try to prepare the swimmers by encouraging them from the beginning to prepare as much as possible. Obviously, for all of us This is the first time. We cope in the best way, and even when there is a difficulty we look for the best possible solution.

"We also had a busy summer in terms of Maccabiah and the Israel Championship, there was the European Water Polo Championship in the pool at the Wingate Institute, and we had to train differently. Exhaustion also invents other solutions. I think that overall we arrive in good shape with a lot of experience. There are positive sides to this year. We faced The best swimmers in the world, and we had good achievements in this competition. We are building on that and we believe that at the moment of truth we will express ourselves in a good way."

Regarding the expectations from the upcoming championships, he said: "The goal is to advance as much as possible in the stages and compete for medals. We want Gorbenko to keep her title as European champion. We saw at the world championships that everyone improved and made achievements, and we want that now too."

Is there an effect on the fact that this time the championship in the pool is open?

"There are ropes there instead of stripes. We competed there in the European Youth Championships last year, and I hope they stay. If not, we will have to face like the other swimmers. There is nothing else that can be done."

To date, Israel has won a total of 14 medals at the European swimming championships, with two gold medals, when apart from Gorbenko it was Yonatan Kopelev who was first on the podium in the 50 meter backstroke in Debrecen 2012, as well as four silver and eight bronze medals.

After the nice progress and nice achievements in the last tournaments, there is something to look forward to in Rome as well.
