Former Real Madrid left-back Fabio Contreau has been banned for one match and fined €850 - a year after he retired from football and officially became a fisherman.
Contreau, 34, received the punishment from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for "insults and inappropriate behaviour" while playing in Rio Abe's heated 3-3 draw with Boavista in April last year.
The 52-cap Portugal international has not played since leaving Rio Raba last year to concentrate on managing a fleet of fishing boats.
The association in Portugal and the local league administration blamed each other for the delay in punishing Contaro, with the association claiming that it had informed the league on two occasions of the need to close the cases against Contaro, while the league responded by saying that "speed in processing any disciplinary proceedings" is "always a goal of our committee ".
Contreau, who won the European Champions Cup with Real Madrid in 2014 and 2017, now owns three fishing vessels in his native Portugal's Stoval, with around 45 people working for him.
"My father always had a boat, he was very involved in fishing," he said in an interview in December, "I knew that one day football would end, I would have to take a different direction in my life, and my happiness is the land and the sea, I wanted to lead this lifestyle."
Contreau also said: "There is no shame in life at sea as many people think. Real men are those who go to sea. I want to reach the age of 40 and own 10 ships. When I was 15 years old I wanted to reach Real Madrid and I knew that I had a long journey ahead of me, a very difficult one, and I know that here , maybe it's going to be more difficult but I'm a very optimistic person. I'm very confident in myself."
The defender also played for Benfica, Monaco and Sporting Lisbon during his career.
