2022-08-11T20:38:53.940Z

FIFA endorsed Thursday evening the decision to advance the start of the 2022 World Cup to Sunday, November 20, so that Qatar can play the opening match against Ecuador.

The World Cup in Qatar will start a day earlier than planned, FIFA's governing body said on Thursday, after its committee unanimously agreed to stage the opening ceremony and the host country's first match. Sunday, November 20.

The original plan was for the opening ceremony to be held before Qatar's Nov. 21 game against Ecuador, which created a rather unusual situation with two matches - Senegal v Netherlands and England v Iran - taking place before ceremony.
