One of the greatest athletes in the history of athletics, and who is still considered an idol in his homeland, Alberto Juantorna, is dying due to complications of Corona in the hospital in Havana, according to reports arriving in the last day from Cuba.
Juantorna (71), Olympic champion in the 400-meter run and 800-meter run (Montreal 1976) and world record holder in the 800-meter run, is the only athlete in the world who has so far won these two runs in one Olympics.
At the Montreal Olympics (1976) Juantorna won two gold medals, in the 400 meter race with a result of 44.26 seconds, the fastest time in the world measured and not achieved at altitude (the world record was set at the Mexico City Olympics), ahead of Fred Newhouse (44.40 seconds) and Herman Fraser (44.95 seconds) - both from the United States - and in the 800 meter run with a new world record of 1:43.50 minutes.
He was also twice chosen as the athlete of the year in the world in 1976 and 1977.

The hospital where he is hospitalized said: "Huantorana has a history of the corona disease, and now he has complications related to his medical background. His condition is critical in view of the medical complications in his heart and health."
Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel tweeted on his Twitter account: "The heart of Cuba" fought fifty years ago to win a medal for us with his heart and legs, and now he is fighting for his life.
Cuba hopes that he will win in this fight as well."
