What enthusiasm and what emotions at Königsplatz.

Hannah Meul boulders to silver behind Olympic champion Janja Garnbret

Munich – Hannah Meul leaned her head back and laughed at the crowd on Königsplatz.

She had just "flashed" the third of four boulders in the bouldering final on Sunday, i.e. climbed through on the first try.

There are extra points for bouldering, which is crucial for the 21-year-old on the way to a silver medal.

"You can dream, but that this dream is now a reality, that's incredible," said the native of Frechen (near Cologne) later on TV.

Only one had been better: the high-flyer Janja Garnbret, who had also won gold the day before in the lead – rope climbing.

The German and the Slovenian were united not only on the podium (with the French Oriane Bertone), but also in their opinion on the atmosphere on the Königsplatz in front of 5,000 spectators.

“It's great to climb in front of such an audience.

I had goosebumps,” Meul said on Saturday when she was 7th in the lead.

As 23-year-old Garnbret put it, "When the crowds are so big, you feel it. It pushes you to grab two or three more holds than you thought."

This effect could have played a major role for Meul, because the phase before the European Championship was bumpy for them.

Because of a corona infection in June, she missed a few World Cups and has only felt "after myself again" since August on the wall, as she had previously said.

Nevertheless, she did not give up hopes of a medal, the season was too strong for that.

She had climbed her first two podiums in the World Cup and also achieved top 10 results in the lead for the first time.

So her skills were no longer a secret, but something she spoke about after the silver coup: “It was my secret wish to climb all the finals.

I didn't even dare to say it for myself.” She achieved this goal, her good results qualified her for the Boulder & Lead finals on Wednesday and Thursday.

The new combination format will also be held at the 2024 Olympic Games.

"I'll give it my all again," said Meul.

The German men had also planned to do the same, but remained without a medal.

Alexander Megos (29) and Yannick Flohé (23) were in the lead on Sunday 5th and 6th, in bouldering they didn't make it to the final on Saturday.

Flohé complained about the routes after he was eliminated in the semifinals.

"It was a single heap of rubbish," reported the man from Essen, who felt that the sequence of grips was too difficult and sometimes "not suitable for competition".
