Following the decision of the families of the victims of Munich 72, not to take part in the special ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the murder of the 11 athletes in the Olympics, the Olympic Committee in Israel issued an official statement today (Tuesday), in which it announced the cancellation of its participation in the ceremony to be held next month.
The official announcement reads: "Good afternoon, in light of the families' decision not to travel to Germany and the Israeli Olympic Committee's decision not to fly to the 50th anniversary ceremony for the assassination of the Jewish People as part of our solidarity with the families, the flight that was supposed to leave on 4.9 is canceled as of this moment.
If the decision changes, we will of course inform as soon as possible."
As I recall, in an official letter published by the chairman, Yael Arad, she said: "There are still 22 days left until the anniversary of the ceremony in Munich and I want to believe that there will be a person in the German government who will listen to the wider international community calling for a solution to the affair and connect all the dots and thus prevent the rupture , to do historical justice and complete the agreements with the representatives of the families."
As of this moment, the German government's compensation arrangements are still not in line with the demands of the families, and therefore, as mentioned, the Olympic Committee, in a most unfortunate move, announced the cancellation of the flight to the ceremony.
