Carolin Schäfer and Sophie Weißenberg can hope for top positions in the heptathlon at the home European Championships in Munich - but the medals are out of reach.
Schäfer, training partner of decathlon European champion Niklas Kaul, is sixth after the first day with 3707 points.
Weißenberg (3706) starts the second day in seventh place.
Schäfer, World Cup second from 2017 and European Championship third from Berlin 2018, and Weißenberg are also heading for around 6300 points.
“It makes me so keen to be standing here on the track.
I don't know when I last had such fun," said Schäfer on ZDF.
Your plan for the second day?
'Full attack.
Let's see what comes out,' she added later.
Schäfer had renounced the World Cup
After missing out on the World Championships due to a lack of training, Schäfer had a good start in the morning with the fifth-best hurdle time and was also happy at the end with 24.16 seconds as the winner of her 200-meter run.
The goal of the 30-year-old from Frankfurt was to place in the top six.
Sophie Weißenberg was tied for fourth after 1.80 meters in the high jump, but fell back in the shot put.
Like Schäfer, the 24-year-old from Bayer Leverkusen then needed 24.16 seconds for the 200 meters.
Gold once again appears to be reserved for defending champion, world champion and Olympic gold medalist Nafissatou Thiam.
After four disciplines, the Belgian is clearly in the lead with 4063 points.
Vice World Champion Anouk Vetter (3824/Netherlands) lurks in third place.
Emma Oosterwegel, Olympic bronze medalist in Tokyo, retired after falling over the hurdles.
