It was a great spectacle what Niklas Kaul delivered in the final in the decathlon over 1500 meters.

The Olympic Stadium was like a madhouse.

Munich – In the end, both sat on the tartan track in Munich's Olympic Stadium and hugged each other.

Exhausted but overjoyed.

Niklas Kaul, the new European champion, and Simon Ehammer, silver medalist.

The decathletes kept it exciting in a gripping duel until the last discipline.

And then Kaul flew away from everyone over the 1500 meters.

"I hope it was as good for you as it was for me.

Munich will always have a place in my heart," he said.

The morning had started dramatically.

Arthur Abele, who is celebrating his farewell here in Munich, was disqualified after an alleged false start over the 110 m hurdles.

The European champion from Berlin 2018 wiped away the tears with the sweaty shirt.

Then the turning point: The protest was successful, Abele was allowed to continue and ran the 110 m hurdles again.

Alone, but powerfully driven by the spectators in the stands.

"I'm totally nervous," said the 36-year-old, who had even thought about just breaking it all off.

Kaul, on the other hand, got off to a smooth start with 14.45 seconds over the 110 m hurdles.

And then Ehammer also blundered, only 34.92 meters with the discus.

However, Kaul was unable to take advantage of this and threw 41.80 meters himself (personal best 49.29).

"I had absolutely no feeling with the discus," said the 24-year-old.

In general, the morning often went according to the motto "attack a little, get through a lot".

Before the afternoon break, they jumped 4.90 meters in pole vault.

Decent, but not more.

ARD expert Frank Busemann (silver medalist in the decathlon at the Olympic Games in Atlanta 1996) predicted that Kaul must now throw the javelin 17 meters further than Ehammer and also be 33 seconds faster in the final 1500 meter run.

And the world champion from Doha 2019 delivered.

With his first attempt, Keul threw the javelin at 70.98 meters – best performance of the season and goosebumps in the Olympic Stadium.

Ehammer only got to 53.46 meters.

And the mood got even better: Kaul's last try at javelin throwing, the fans got up.

The German thanked it with 76.05 meters.

"Oh, how beautiful that is," echoed through the stadium.

Kaul went out of himself, drummed on his chest, the message before the final: I'm fully there now!

The starting position before the decisive 1500 meters: Kaul needed 27 seconds ahead of Ehammer, 27 seconds for the European Championship title at home.

And then that: no signal on the starting pistol, there was a problem with the electronic timing.

The best decathletes in Europe were ready - and the technology failed.

With a few minutes delay and an extra dose of adrenaline, we went to the track.

Kaul, who was born in Mainz, had hoped that the audience would carry him through the second day, his cream day in the decathlon.

And the 40,000 or so who stood screamed and carried him.

Kaul quickly took the lead, Ehammer ran at the back of the field.

With a personal best of 4:10.04, Kaul completed the 1500 meters faster than ever in his life.

Ehammer finished 38 seconds later.

"Emotionally it's worth even more than my world title.

I just flew over the 1500 meters.

It was amazing," said King Kaul.
