She just missed gold: Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo secured European silver in the long jump at the European Championships in Munich.

A Serbian jumps even further.

Munich – long jump world champion Malaika Mihambo has lost her European title.

The Olympic champion had to admit defeat at the European Championships in Munich's Olympic Stadium with 7.03 m by Serbian Ivana Vuleta (7.06), bronze went to Jazmin Sawyers from Great Britain (6.80).

European Championships in Munich: Malaika Mihambo won long jump silver in Munich

After her triumph at the World Cup in Eugene in July, Mihambo was infected with Corona and only last week gave the green light to start at the European Championships in Munich.

The 28-year-old had been unbeaten at major outdoor events since her 2018 European Championship triumph in Berlin.

The second German starter Merle Homeier (Göttingen) took ninth place with 6.42 m.

Mikaelle Assani (Karlsruhe/6.46) and Maryse Luzolo (Königstein/6.28) were eliminated in the qualification.

Just a few moments before Mihambo's silver medal, Munich's local hero Tobias Potye surprisingly won silver in the high jump.

The 27-year-old jumped 2.27 m and celebrated the biggest success of his career - and of all places in the Olympic Stadium in his hometown.

Gold went to Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy with 2.30 m. Bronze went to the Ukrainian Andrij Prozenko, who, like Potye, managed 2.27 m - but made two failed attempts at 2.23.

Defending champion Mateusz Przybylko (Leverkusen) was sixth this time with 2.23 m.

Jonas Wagner (Dresden) already failed at the initial height of 2.18 m.
