A veteran and a talent: The River Rats continue to rely on Martin Morczinietz and Johanna May in goal.

Geretsried – Just under a week before the start of ice training, Bayernliga club ESC Geretsried announced the last two contract extensions.

Martin Morczinietz and Johanna May will continue to provide strong support for the River Rats' defense in goal.

"This completes our squad," explains spokesman Tom Kinzel.

The two goalies couldn't be more different.

Here the experienced Morczinietz, who recently celebrated his 38th birthday and is now in his sixth season with his hometown club.

The son of the former TuS and ESC coach Robert Morczinietz and younger brother of ex-national player Andreas can look back on a long and successful career: He was in the DEL (Augsburg, Hanover) and DEL 2 (Bremerhaven, Bietigheim) for six years ) and nine seasons in the Oberliga (Klostersee, Sonthofen).

With the Bietigheim Steelers, Morczinietz became DEL 2 champion in 2009 and DEB Cup winner in 2012.

In addition to experience, reliability and concentration, Martin is particularly distinguished by his absolutely outstanding saves.”

Tom Kinzel, ESC spokesman

"In addition to experience, reliability and concentration, Martin is particularly distinguished by his absolutely outstanding saves," emphasizes the ESC spokesman.

In fact, it seems that Morczinietz has gotten better and better over the years: last season, after the preliminary round, he was the seventh-best goalkeeper in the Bayernliga with an average of 4.27 goals against;

in the relegation round he even improved by one place with a rate of 4.72.

After many years sharing the post between the posts with David Albanese, the veteran is now the clear number one and takes responsibility on the ice and in the dressing room.

"I'm by far the oldest.

I can and must say something," Morczinietz explained in an interview with this newspaper.

He doesn't demand anything impossible from his young front men: "But only

that they don't always just focus on scoring goals - but also on preventing goals.

That is enormously important in this Bavarian league, because all clubs are well-manned on the offensive.”

May is technically very strong

The veteran also complimented his two deputies Maximilian Freytag and Johanna May: “They are technically very strong.

You can see that they worked with goalkeeping coaches from a young age.

Unfortunately, that was different in my time.” While Freytag is no longer in the Geretsrieder squad next season, those responsible continue to place their trust in the 22-year-old May. The younger sister of center forward Benedikt May has performed well in a total of 22 appearances shown "and made it difficult for the opposing attackers to get the disc over the line," emphasizes Tom Kinzel.

The young goalkeeper "won the sympathy of our fans" in a very short time.

Technically strong: Johanna May gets the trust of those responsible for the ESC as a backup goalie.

Johanna May was trained as a junior at the EC Bad Tölz, played in the Bundesliga and DNL as well as in the women's U18 national team.

She moved to Geretsried in 2019 and sometimes played for the River Rats and the U20s at the same time.
