In his first match since his retirement from Wimbledon, Rafael Nadal unexpectedly ended his career in the Cincinnati tournament this morning (Thursday) in the second round.
The Spaniard ranked third in the world succumbed to the Croatian Borna Coric after 7:6 (9), 4:6, 6:3 in a match that lasted two hours and 51 minutes.
Coric, who achieved the critical break in the match, during the third set will meet Roberto Bautista-Agot in the next stage of the Spanish derby.
The bull from Majorca, who is also the all-time record holder for winning Grand Slam titles, did not try to look for excuses at the end of the match: "I returned to playing tennis after a difficult period. I will check in the coming days to make sure everything is fine, because I trained much better than how I played.

"It's clear to me that I wasn't at my best in this match," continued Nadal, "I wasn't ready to win this match. I've come back better from injuries in the past. That's clear to me."
