Asamoah Gian Seeks Revenge | Israel today

2022-08-19T16:18:04.299Z

At the age of 36, with a small stomach, the Ghanaian player returned to training in football • and the reason? Luis Suarez's hand touch in the match between his national team and Uruguay in the 2010 World Cup • 12 years later, the striker dreams of revenge in Qatar

Asamoah Gian has no apparent reason to run as he did in the video he uploaded to social media this week.

The Ghanaian striker is already 36 years old, his small belly is difficult to hide under his shirt, the result of a relationship that gradually dissolved between him and football.

According to the records, Gian's last game was as a substitute in a domestic league game in May 2021. According to the same records, his last goal was in an Indian League game in December 2019, while he has not played for the national team since July 2019 and has not scored in the national uniform since a friendly against the USA in September 2017 So why is a former Udinese, Rann and Sunderland player circling stadiums and insisting so much on getting fit? In two words: the World Cup. In one word: revenge.

In an interview he gave to the BBC last week, Gian detailed the reasons that led him to knock out sprints in the heat of August;

"The World Cup is the dream of every footballer and I think I still have a drop of energy and desire to prove that I'm right there. In terms of talent, everything is in place, now we just have to work on the physical side."

This explanation is one part of the story, the other part is related to an event that took place 12 years ago and includes hand touching;

"The whole world knows what exactly happened there" said the insulter, obviously referring to the World Cup quarter-final between Ghana and Uruguay where Luis Suarez prevented the Africans from scoring with his hand, leaving them with a penalty that Gian missed.

Following the miss, Ghana missed an opportunity to be the first team from Africa in the semi-finals, and the striker was left with the scar.

"When the house draw for the World Cup in Qatar arranged us and Uruguay in the same house, the only thing I thought about was revenge. When the moment comes to play against them, and if I am part of the team, you never know what will happen in that game."

Uncertainty is a good way to describe what is happening now around Gian.

On the one hand, this is the all-time top goalscorer of the Ghana national team (51 goals) and the most prolific African scorer in the history of the World Cup (6 goals), but in his current situation, this resume seems to have no importance.

Even his attempt to give as an example Roja Milla who in 1994 returned from retirement to the Cameroon national team and scored at the age of 42 in the World Cup fails to convince.

In addition, according to the actor himself, it is still only an idea;

"I haven't talked about it with anyone yet," he admitted, "it's still just a plan. I want to be sure that my body responds well and if I reach a certain level of fitness I'll declare that I'm ready. So far everything is going well, so we'll wait and see. Maybe there will be surprises".

The detractors, and you can understand them, find it difficult to wait patiently.

Even though Jian made it clear that it was all just a thought running through his head, many of them are determined to express an opinion.

Christian Atsu, who played with him in the team at the World Cup in 2014, was excited by the idea and tweeted;

"I ask that you grant Gian his last wish."

Ahmed Barroso, who also played in the national team, was already more moderate and said;

"Gian is a good striker, but is he worth the World Cup? That is already a very difficult question. If he played in a team like Zlatan plays in Milan, it would make more sense."

Honor @ASAMOAH_GYAN3 with his last wish🙏

And there is also the opinion of the coordinator of Ghana's national teams in the past, Dr. Oman Buama, who stated; "Asamoah served the country faithfully and received a lot of respect, so let's not trample on his honor and ours by bringing him to the World Cup in 2022.

It is not coordinated with the dynamism and demands of modern football."

Truth be told, the latter's words seem the most logical.

Gian was really a great striker who recorded very impressive achievements with the Ghanaian national team, but to go from zero to an appearance in the World Cup in less than 100 days is a task that seems too pretentious.

You can understand the desire for revenge that motivates Gian, especially when on the other hand Luis Suarez and his cursed hand may stand against him, but sometimes it is better to let go and let others take revenge for you.
