Discus throw at European Athletics Championships: After the father, the son also wins the European Championship medal in Munich

Munich is a good place for the Lithuanian discus family Alekna: 20 years after his father, the son also won his EM medal here. Norway's superstar Karsten Warholm demonstrated his class over the hurdles.

Like father, like son: The

Lithuanian Mykolas Alekna secured the European title in the

discus throw

at the European Championships in Munich with a championship record (69.78) – ahead of the Slovenian world champion Kristjan Ceh (68.28) and the British Lawrence Okoye (67.14).

He followed in his father's footsteps.

In 2002, when the European Championships were also held in Munich's Olympic Stadium, Alekna's father Virgilijus won the silver medal.

Mykolas Alekna, now 19, was born a month and a half later.

Virgilijus Alekna has twice won Olympic and World Championship gold in his career. In 2006 he was crowned European champion in Gothenburg, like his son now.

Warholm breaks the Schmid record

Athletics star Karsten Warholm secured gold in the

400-meter hurdles

and broke Harald Schmid's 40-year-old European Championship record.

The Norwegian successfully defended his Berlin 2018 title in 47.12 seconds in front of Frenchman Wilfried Happio (48.56) and Yasmani Copello (Turkey/48.78) in the Munich Olympic Stadium.

Joshua Abuaku missed a medal in fifth place by a hundredth, the man from Frankfurt ran a personal best of 48.79 seconds.

in fifth place when Zharnel Hughes (Great Britain) triumphed

The man from Cologne celebrated the greatest international success of his career after 20.50 seconds.

Most recently, 36 years ago, German sprinters were in a European Championship final over half a stadium lap.

Top favorite Hughes, second in Munich over the 100 meters, was unbeatable in 20.07 seconds.

His compatriot Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake (20.17) made the double victory perfect for the British.

The Italian Filippo Tortu secured bronze with 20.27 seconds.

Defending champion Ramil Guliyev (Turkey) had to retire injured.

Obstacle Title for Finland

Hanna Klein and Katharina Trost missed a surprise in the EM final over

1500 meters

.

When the Scot Laura Muir (4:01.08) won the favourite, Klein took fifth place in 4:05.49 minutes, almost two seconds short of the podium.

Trost finished tenth in the Munich Olympic Stadium (4:06.95).

Ireland's Ciara Mageean (4:02.56) secured silver ahead of Sofia Ennaoui (4:03.59) from Poland, fifth at the World Championships.

The fastest of the year, Muir, picked up the pace one lap before the end and easily won the race.

Finland's Topi Raitanen has won European Championship gold in the

3000m

steeplechase, ending France's winning streak at European level.

The 26-year-old beat the Italians Ahmed Abdelwahed (8:22.35) and Osama Zoghlami (8:23.44) in 8:21.80 minutes in Munich's Olympic Stadium on Friday evening.

Karl Bebendorf from Dresden took a strong fifth place in 8:26.49 minutes.

finished eighth and last in the women's

200m final .

The 28-year-old from Burghausen and third in the World Championships in the sprint relay crossed the finish line in 23.24 seconds on Friday.

Mujinga Kamundji from Switzerland became the new European champion in 22.32 seconds.

She had won silver in the 100 meters.

Defending champion Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain was third in 22.43 seconds.
