Celebrate your birthday as world champion: The now 16-year-old Xaver Schwarz was allowed to do so.

He is one of four World Championship winners from the Bavarian Yacht Club.

Starnberg – Xaver Schwarz could not have given himself a nicer birthday present.

When the clock jumped to midnight, the sailor from the Bavarian Yacht Club was not only able to celebrate his 16th birthday, but also the biggest title in his young sports career so far: just a few hours earlier, he and his club colleague Severin Gericke (16) were on the Hungarian Balaton Junior World Champion in the 420.

Sailing: Four junior world champions from Starnberg

But that's not all: With Valentina Steinlein and Lea Adolph, the BYC brought another team onto the podium as third place in the overall field - and as the best girls' duo, the two Starnberg women were also crowned junior world champions in the female U17.

Ilja Wolf is mighty proud of his protégés.

"There were only four German world champions in the 420s, and three of them came from the Bavarian Yacht Club," says the coach, who has been leading the 420 class of the Starnberg club for decades to the absolute top in the country and now also in Europe has led.

“Apart from the Olympics, the World Cup is the biggest thing there is.

You work towards this all year round,” adds Wolf.

420 World Championship: For Gericke/Schwarz the icing on the cake of a great summer

Especially for Severin Gericke and Xaver Schwarz, the title is the icing on the cake of a great season.

The duo won the silver medal both at the Kiel Week in June and at the European Youth Championships in Vilamoura (Portugal) in July.

On Lake Balaton, Gericke and Schwarz sailed an impressive series in the field of 72 boats from 15 countries: Three wins, three second places and one third place were included in the ranking, they were able to cancel fourth place and thus ended up with an impressive 17 points Ahead of the vice world champions from Spain.

420 World Championships at Lake Balaton: Steinlein/Adolph also safe

Valentina Steinlein and Lea Adolph, who were looked after by private coach Riccardo de Felice, didn't make any real mistakes either.

The two 16-year-olds dropped a 13th place, they brought in two wins and a second, third, fifth, seventh and tenth place each.

Just like Gericke/Schwarz, Steinlein/Adolph already secured the World Championship title after the penultimate race.

In the end, the two girls were even level with the second-placed Spaniards, who, however, were slightly ahead due to one win.

Sailing: Concentrated and hard training as the basis for World Championship victories

Of course, that didn't detract from the joy in the BYC team.

Finally, the one-week "concentrated and hard training" (Wolf) on Lake Balaton in the run-up to the title fights was rewarded with two world championship titles.

The two other duos from Starnberg that took part in the World Championships also played a decisive part in this: Felicitas Spitz and Chiara Albani as well as Vincenzo Reuter and Lucas Schürmann supported the new world champions Severin Gericke and Xaver Schwarz on their way to the top of the world through their great commitment in joint training .

Spitz/Albani also impressed with a race win and eleventh place in the female U17.

Overall, the World Championship debutants ended up in 31st place. Reuter/Schuermann, who had to start in the Men/Mixed class, were the second-best German team in 55th place among 111 boats.
