Schmelz is in favor of Becker and Bastian

Matthias Schmelz has been the regional representative for the Kassel region for two years and at the same time the Kassel district football manager.

The 36-year-old therefore sits ex officio on the Hessian Football Association's association match committee and is part of the association's board of directors.

In the interview, he comments on the latest developments in the association and speaks out in favor of Torsten Becker as HFV President and Thorsten Bastian as his Vice President.

Mr. Schmelz, isn't football getting a bit of a raw deal in the association at the moment?

I've only been on the board for two years.

But actually I thought that the main thing we talked about was football.

That wasn't always the case.

Why is that?

It hasn't just been very restless in the association in the past few months after the resignations of Stefan Reuss and Ralf Viktora.

We have to get into calmer waters as soon as possible and get more consistency in personal details.

That's why it was good that the Extraordinary Association Day was cancelled.

Did you vote for cancellation?

Absolutely!

This event would have cost around 40,000 to 60,000 euros and in the current situation with the increased energy costs, the clubs in particular will have a hot autumn.

We're letting around 400 people from all over Hesse travel there, in order to have three new offices elected in probably a maximum of two hours.

This is enormously questionable and irresponsible, both economically and ecologically, especially since it was not required by the statutes.

On the contrary.

Matthias Schmelz is a "freshman" in the association: the 36-year-old started his career in the district football committee in 2019 as a cup match manager and C-League class manager, and just one year later was elected district football manager and finally regional representative.

He is also the main cashier and football department manager at the Kassel group league club TSV Heiligenrode.

The salesman is also involved in local politics and is a community representative in Niestetal.

There were also legal doubts.

Not only that. On site, the delegates could have voted against the need for an extraordinary association day.

We would then have gone home without having achieved anything - and would have been the laughing stock in all of Germany.

Now the district football wardens are to get an impression of the mood regarding the candidates Torsten Becker, Thorsten Bastian and Robert Neubauer for any vacant positions by September 9th.

How do you feel about the trio?

I would have spoken out directly for the three at the meeting on Tuesday.

Torsten Becker and Thorsten Bastian are good friends - and will get along very well as President and Vice President in order to be able to do the work that needs to be done.

We district football wardens, for example, ultimately look for a team with whom we harmonize for our work in the district.

I can definitely support that.

Whether it is actually the right solution remains to be seen.

It is quite simply important that we get together a really capable executive committee.

The facts are now such that it is not the delegates, but the supervisory board, based on the proposal of the executive committee, who decides on the composition of the executive committee.

Would you have liked more choice?

At our association board meeting last Tuesday, everyone had the opportunity to stand up and position themselves.

There was the opportunity for other people to throw their ring in the hat.

Torsten Becker had even asked for this.

But that didn't happen.

So I hope that the districts will vote in favor of Becker, Bastian and Neubauer on September 9th and the supervisory board will appoint the trio so that we can finally talk about football again.
