The jersey worn by Michael Jordan during the first game of the 1998 NBA Finals will be auctioned by Sotheby's from September 6 to 14 this year.
The bid will be posted on Sotheby's website, and is expected to fetch between $3 million and $5 million.
Brahm Wachter, director of
Streetware
and Modern Collectibles at Sotheby's, has said that this jersey is one of the most significant artifacts from the Jordan collection to hit the market: “When you think about the arc of Michael Jordan's career, and his last chance to win a sixth NBA championship, this game truly holds a special place in the hearts of all his fans,” he said.
The 1997-98 Bulls finished the regular season 62 wins to 20 losses.
In the final they faced the Utah Jazz in a six-game series.
In the final game, Jordan hit the game-winning basket with just five seconds remaining, giving the Chicago team its second hat-trick in eight years.
He was named the Most Valuable Player of the Finals.
The basketball player retired after that game, before returning in 2001 as a player for the Washington Wizards, a team with which he played for two seasons.
He is now a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and owner of the Charlotte Hornets basketball team.
