Olympic champion Alexander Zverev will not take part in the US Open in New York (August 29 to September 11) after his severe ankle injury.
The organizers announced this on Monday afternoon.
Zverev twisted his ankle in the semifinals of the French Open in a duel with eventual tournament winner Rafael Nadal on June 3 and had to be operated on after tearing three outer ligaments.
Until recently he had toyed with a start in New York, his new goal is now a comeback in the Davis Cup in mid-September.
»We all have our own journey in life.
That's part of mine.
Next week I'll be number 2 in the world, but this morning I had to have an operation," Zverev told his 1.8 million followers after the Wimbledon accident.
His rehab started immediately after the operation.
A few days ago, the Monegasque by choice could even be seen at the sprint training session in the Monaco stadium.
During his absence from professional sports, the 25-year-old published his diabetes and announced the establishment of his own foundation.
In addition to providing insulin and other essential medicines, his foundation finances projects for affected children and young people.
"I'm in the privileged situation of leading a life that I've always wanted to lead," said Zverev.
